brave mom

My mom was diagnosed with stage 111sovarian cancer in 11/05. She was 69. She had debulking and was put on taxol and carboplatin. She survived a wonderful year without chemo and rising ca125, then it all happened again. She was put on taxotere and carboplatin for another 6 rounds. This time the tumors in her abdomen did not go away. Next, hexalen was tried. She took it for 2 weeks and rested 2 weeks. She did this twice with a rising ca125. Now, the doctor has taken her off hexalen and she will try doxil next week. Any thoughts on this. Has anyone tried doxil after these other chemos? What side effects may appear?

My daughter is on Doxil, she was dx in June of 2006, debulking, 6 rounds of first line chemo, recurred in Feb, put on a trial of tykerb and toptecan, 2 months, CA125 starting rising, now has had 8 months of Doxil, CA125 slowly coming down.  Go to the Doxil web side and read all the side affects. We didn't research it and when she developed the foot and hand syndrome, it was very painful, this can be prevented by using cooling during infusions, also they advise taking COQ10 to prevent heart damage, most side effects do not start with Doxil till between the 1st and 2nd time.  Daughter takes quite a few suppliments , this is always up to the individual, her doctor cleared for her each one that she takes. The blood platelet counts really matter in this as to whether they respond in time for the next infusion. They stated her off at 80 and have reduced to 60 now . Leslee feels quite well most of the time, does have problems with constipation, needs to drink at the minimum of a liter a day.doxil is one of the oldest chemos, and works well for some and not for others. Hope it works for your Mom.  Marty
