concerned

I havent started my chemo due to a cold as many of you know. Well as far as I know the cold is all but gone, but there is something that is even more concerning...I went to work today, still felt like I had a cold, but it was livable. As time went on, my neck, right behind my ear started to hurt. Right now it hurts like you know what. I can hardly turn my head, and the gland is swollen. I didnt sleep funny or it would have hurt when I got up. I am not under any more stress than usual but yeuooch!!!! has any one else had this happen before chemo was ever started any responses would be greatly appreciated. thank you

The lymphatic system filters fluid from around cells. It is an important part of the immune system. When people refer to swollen glands in the neck, they are usually referring to swollen lymph nodes. Common areas where lymph nodes can be easily felt, especially if they are enlarged, are: the groin, armpits (axilla), above the clavicle (supraclavicular), in the neck (cervical), and the back of the head just above hairline (occipital).

Lymph nodes can become swollen from infection, inflammatory conditions, an abscess , or cancer. Other causes of enlarged lymph nodes are rare. By far, the most common cause of swollen lymph nodes is infection.

because yours came on suddenly  it is most likely an infection and the lymph system is trying to fight the infection.

It is not like that it is more in my neck not my ear, as I can hardly move my head . The cold is all but gone, even my appetite is back, this is different. I have had ear infections before adn know that those hurt like no bodys business, but this feels like a swollen gland without being swollen. Is this something that will affect the chemo, or what? I have taken the pain med that I hardly ever take and a muscle relaxer that I hardly ever take and neither have helped. Told hubby that if it aint better in a couple of days or worse tomarrow I will go to the fast track dept of the emergency room as I have never felt anything like this before in my life

I have been very sick with a throat/ear issue.  It may just be horrible luck that you have a flu/cold right now.  I'll be praying for you to get better soon.  Hang in there and try to get some rest.

Kinda sounds like the cold moved into the inner ear, the tube that runs from the sinuses, run into the ear through a tube called the Eustachin tube, if this becomes infected or blocked the gland back of the ear sweels and becomes very tender. Usually it takes an anti biotic to clear it up.  A sneeze, blowing the nose can cause this to happen.
