ct scan vs transvaginal ultrasound for comples mass

Hi Everyone! I am new to this site and I have a question.  On March 17 I  had a transvaginal ultrasound preformed it detected a 5.3 cm irregular complex mas on my left ovary.  On the 20 of April i had another transvaginal ultrasound preformed which again showed the mass. Then on april 24 i had a cat scan preformed on which no mass was seen. The results of my ca 125 blood test have not been recieved back yet. So my question is how reliable is a cat scan versus a transvaginal ultra sound? Could my mass have disappeared or is a cat scan not as accurate as an ultrasound. I am going for another ultra sound today and will see my gyn/ob tomorrow. This roller coaster i am on is driving me crazy. Thanks everyone.

I had a CT scan and the report said 10 ovarian cysts, some as big as 10 x 5 cms.  But my OB/gyn, when I presented the films to him told me he can't read a CT and did a pelvic U/S.  He found the big ones and diagnosed a blood supply going to them but not the little ones.  So, it depends on who is reading what and their skill level with the technology--I'd ask what the doc is used to reading.

Wow, that was fast but your doc sounds excellent. To recognize the problem and get things moving right away. That;s a good thing.
Good luck on Monday, hopefully all goes well for you. I know what you mean though, sort of scary, yes definitely.

Hello there...I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer by trans-vaginal ultrasound...the scans give additional information required to know what is going on from a different perspective. Some in the medical field say the us gives the best view of the reproductive organs..anyway...I wanted to suggest you get a gyn/oncologist's opinion and, if you do have surgery get a gyn/onc to do your surgery..they are specialists in this arena....
Peace

Did you have to have other tests to be sure, or is the transvag conclusive? They can "see" cancer?

My gyn is evidently experienced enough to recognize what he saw...he told me this type tumor prexents in his office maybe once a year...it was definately not a regular occurance and is easily recognized for that reason. I did see a gyn/onc the following morning...and had surgery the following morning.  I was lucky to have a very experienced gyn and gyn/onc surgeon. I am so glad I didn't end up having surgery for fibroids and have them find cancer...I am grateful to my gyn....have a 3 month appt with him on Monday.  Yeachhh..don't like those...sort of scary.
Peace, kiddo.

I will be very interested in what your doc says and what some of the ladies on this forum say in regard to your question. I too wonder...I have differing results between CT and transvaginal and regular ultrasound. In my case I am having surgery next week so I will find out for sure what is in there but it is frustrating not having each test confirm the other tests.

Hope you will come back and share what your doc tells you. nanik

Yes, my gyn is teriffic....but it wasn't he who got things moving quickly...after the initial exam he said I should make an appt for a ultrasound..I went to the front desk and said I want one today...I argued until I got an appt 4 hours later..I went to Barnes and Nobles and read until it was time for me to return..after the us the tech said he'd be in touch after he read the pics..I said I would not leave...I told her he was at the end of the hall...I was here..she held the film..I'd wait until he read them...after he read them, he said we will schedule  surgery and he would get back to me..I asked him where he would send his wife if she was in this spot..he told me..I said let's make an appt....his nurse and I went into his office and called until we got an appt the following morning .
After that apt the next morning, the gyn/onc said he'd see me the following 6:00a.m.  I was given a pre-op work up and that delicious drink to clean me out...I showed up..had surgery and was on my way. So, yes I am lucky I had a good gyn, but he was going to put me off for 6 weeks...then he would have seen the us and it would have been there long enough to advance..as it is I was diagnosed IC....I am very lucky and thankful...but, it shows how men put women off and that we need to be more agressive when it comes to our health care.
Peace, lady.

I had a u/s done Jan 11th and showed a 10.2cm cyst behing my uterus.  When i went for a CT scan beginning of this month it said that there was a 5.3cm cyst and a 3.2cm.  Than he sent me for another U/S and it showed 2 cysts on that was 3cm inside my ovary that was fluid filled and the other on my kidney not sure what kind but he doesnt seem concerned because they are shrinking.  In my opinion i think the first one was done wrong and it was never that big.  This place was sketchy.  Anyhow I am not sure why 3 different test 3 different results. My first ca-125 was 37 and than 78.  No I am shipped off to someone else only to stand in the canadian waiting list just to see a gyno.  rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!

Welcome to the site!  Just to let you know, 99% of ovarian cysts, masses, tumors are BENIGN!!!  I feel that the transvag us is a better tool for finding things in the female reproductive area.   You are in my thoughts and prayers.  Godspeed
