dreaming

I am going to have surgery in september and am worried about having bad dreams!! under anesthetic (sorry about spelling) will i be out for the count or do you dream ???  I am having trouble with sleeping and bad dreams at the moment due to this upcoming surgery and the thought of having a nightmare whilst under is worrying me even more.

I worried about the same thing, since I'm really restless when I sleep (didn't want to be tossing around on the table with a scalpel in me!), but you get that shot, and nothing.... you wake up with a vague recollection of maybe being asleep, and nothing else.

You're unconscious not asleep - no dreams!

I have had six surgeries, all on the abdomen and although I dream all of the time, usually not good ones, I go to sleep under anesthesia and seem to be under only a second and then I am awake again. My last surgery was 10 to 11 hours long and it seemed like a second to me, with no dreaming at all. Don't worry, you will be fine.

I might call the doctor and ask him for some xanax or something to calm you down prior to surgery. It worked for me before and after surgery.

Take Care,
Danielle

Lack of dreaming with anesthesia is actually one of the more disturbing things about having it.  One minute you're awake and then bam you're asleep and then you're awake.  Weird.

I was actually worried about this too because I dream ALL the time and I did not while under anethesia. I did not even feel like I had been asleep. I remember being taken into the operating room and the last thing I remember was being introduced to everyone in there and then I woke up with oxygen on. I was not even sure I had already had the surgery or not. I actually was feeling around my belly to see if it was still big but as soon as the nurse saw me awake she told me I was OK and the surgery was over. It was not near as scary feeling as I had imagined. Good Luck!

Same here.  I've had general anesthesia and slept like a baby.  I am a vivid dreamer and during surgery....nothing.  Don't worry.
