Encouraging news I hope... my husband got this last year on his leg and was hospitalized overnight with iv antibiotics. It worked very quickly and he made a full recovery. Hope that helps, and I wish you luck and a speedy recovery!

Sorry you are are going through this. It is miserable.
I also picked up MRSA in my surgical site during hysterectomy. Two weeks later and after visits to doctor and emergency room with an opening in the incision - my med onc finally did a culture at my pre-chemo appt. By the time the culture came back I was in the hospital with sepsis and I had to spend 10 days there before I was sent home with a PICC line and several more weeks of antibiotics. I never saw an infectious disease specialist. Someone who came to visit me picked up MRSA before they started using precautions.
The possibility of MRSA doesn't seem to be taken seriously. I'm still upset at how long it went and how sick I got before they did anything.
I went to doctor he gave me a letter just sayin must go for sonar and GRADE I PDI what does it mean they dont tell me anything do they detect that I have cancer
My Husband went through months of vancomycin treatment for Mersa in his spine that he aquired at the hospital.
It finally cured his infection and he has never gotten it back. While he was in the hospital I discovered a natural antibotic called organo oil. I had my husband take this oil at least once a day while he was still in the hospital to prevent any more infections.
Do some research yourself on this natural antibiotic and vancomycin.
While you are on any antibiotics, it would be a good idea to take acidophilus pills. All antibiotics kill good bacteria in you colon and the asicophilus product, keeps the good bacteria in your system. It also prevents yeast infections.
My Husband ended up with a colostomy becuase of a idiot doctor, not diognosing his dirrehea , which was caused from the vancomycin.
Do your own research and always ask lots and lots of questions.

I don't know how large the abcess but MRSA is fairly common these days and can be treated with bactrim orally and mupirocin topically. Good luck!
Soniek, I'm sorry you're doing so bad. just wanted to let you know that a picc line and long term antibiotics usually do get rid of msra, your doctor should schedule you for a picc line insert asap, it can be done as an outpatient procedure. I would definitely call him and pressure him to commit to an appointment for the procedure. If that fails than maybe you should go to another er, you want to get started with the antibiotics as quick as possible. oh i think its vanomyicin or something like that.
hey there..i have not seen the infectius disese doctor,so to be honest with you..i have NO IDEA WHAT THE PAN IS..but,they better do it soon...my packing is coming out solid green again, and the horrible smell is back as of this am..ive told them over and over, and all they keep telling me is that it is abcessed again..ok...well i understand this...SO FRIGGIN HELP ME...i told my mom,if it gets any worse,im going to the er,but NOT the er my doc works at...im going to one in a totally diiferent town..expalin to them i have mra,i am abcessed again, and refusing to leave till someone helps me....is the whole medical community like this???this is insane, and inhumane...they have all stressed to me how very serious this is..and how it could take months and months to go into "remission"from this, but if they dont help me soon, they wont have to worry about it,because its going to kill me....
I'm glad they finally got it right! Hope this treatment helps you too!

I am currently in chemo and had to go to the ER just last Sunday for swollen lymph nodes and a facial abscess. They thought I might have MRSA and treated it as such until the cultures come back. I had never heard of MRSA and looked it up and like you, I was pissed that they didn't tell me more about it, like how to avoid spreading it to other people or reinfecting myself.
I lucked out, cultures came back negative and the antibiotic they gave me to start, Minocycline, seems to be working. I might even be able to keep my March 30 appointment for my last chemo treatment.
Good luck and keep us posted!
Hello again....just concerned.
How is your site cleaned?
Is the incision open?
What keeps the picc line from becomming a source for spread of the infection?
Are you taking oral antibiotics as well as IV antibiotics?
I read about an antibiotic called vancomycin being first line and if no response, then linezolid. What are you taking?
Please don't forget to ask about "cerexa"(I mentioned that in my first response to you).
Take care.....you gotta' stay on top of this situation....it is really important for you to be agressive in this management.
Peace soon I hope!

hey dian...the first course of treatment is to insert a picc-line,to try to get the infection under control..as if last night,i have the same horrid green glob, and its starting smell bad again...they may have to take me into another surgery, since it is so bad again, and only been home one week, and this started again on sunday...so i had only been home for 2 days, when it started again....my mom had suggested the cleaveland clinic..but i so dont wanna go 4 hours away for treatment...this is just unreal to me..all this from a hysterectomy...there is also a med that starts with a v..and they use that in the iv form...im not sure how long ill have to be on the pic line, but my nurse said many many weeks...the doctor called me a bt ago,and we were talking, and he told me,he wasnt even aware of truley how bad it had goten again, untill my nurse contacted him this am...he said when the er doc paged him,all he told him was it appeared to be reinfected..but did not tell him it was oozing again, and didnot tell him about the HUGE lump i have again...the nursing agency forgot to order my supplies, and finally did so yesterday,we are hoping the come this afternoon, because,i only have enough supplies left to last till tomorrow nights packing...thanks all of you all for all of your advise, and support...even with all this, physically today,i feel pretty good...i hope i keep feeling this way....
Sonie...what is it they are suggesting you do...what are they saying they intend to do to help you fight this stuff?
They have to have some sort of plan.....are you still at home?
I Googled MRSA.... seems on 3/16/06 the FDA fast tracked a drug....Cerexa (PDI-0903) for treatmend of MRSA. I don't know if this info will help, but at least it gives you a question to ask of your treating physician.
Why did you mention the clinic in Cleveland...was it suggested as a place for you to go for treatment? If so, you absolutely must get there!
There has to be some way we can help you get there.
Keep us well informed so we can help.
Man; I wish you and your family could find some Peace.

I have had MRSA twice, but both times it was an infection in my lungs. It is a little different in a wound. However, I was able to irradicate it quite easily. The IV antibiotics should do the trick. I would expect that you would need to be on them for at least a month, maybe even 6 weeks given your history. If your would is covered and dressings are changed regularily and everyone used good hand washing technique, I'm sure your kids will be fine. Also, if you have a pet, don't let them lick you and don't you kiss them cause pets can catch it too and pass it on with licking.

I know someone who developed an infection of antibiotic resistant staph, and who was finally cured of it by the IV medication. As far as I know, no one else in his family developed the disease and his family has several children in it, so perhaps your children are not especially at risk. I think that it would be far worse for infants and toddlers, who stick everything in their noses and mouths, but older children who know to wash their hands and use their own toothbrushes should be relatively safe.
I guess that you have not spoken with the specialist yet, but that doctor should be able to provide you with tips to assist the situation. I think I recall his wife saying that her husband had to do things like sterilize his toothbrush after using it. I myself developed a "chronic" upper respiratory infection about ten years ago that required that activity as well.
Oh my! After all you've been through. You and your family will be in my thoughts and prayer.
Oh my gosh you poor thing - scream all you want - I am screaming with you. But then get it out and lets get good positive energy flwoing toward that infection. Sometimes I think these docs don't know their rear end from a hole in the ground!
