You might want to focus on her pain. I know that I can't think or eat or make any logical plans if I'm hurting. So pain management seems to be the first order of business.
I don't know if you're in the US or not, but I found some interesting information in Consumer Reports -- the September 2009 issue has a lot of basic health information. They are on the internet as a dot org, by the way.
In an article about hospitals, there is a list of hospital-based specialists you can ask to coordinate a patient's care. One is a palliative-care specialist, which you could think of as a pain management specialist, I think. Here's what they say: "Usually a physician who focuses on improving patients' comfort, coordinating their care, and providing counseling and support for patients and their families. Unlike hospice programs, palliative care can be helpful for anyone with a complex, serious condition, not just those nearing the end of their lives."
Hospice is typically offered in the last six months of life, and a hospice team can include doctors, nurses, social workers, therapists, pastors, etc. Hospice services can be offered in the hospital of at home. It includes pain management but also other aspects of death and dying.
Good luck and let us know how your Mom is doing.
I am so sorry to hear that your mum is getting worse. Other than the pain killers I am not sure what else can be done. This beast has a mind of its own. Mine is also starting to spread after almost 4 years and I am not sure what we can do. We are still trying chemo and are looking into clinical trials. Know that your mum is in my prayers.
