Hi,
I am 48 - had a hysterectomy June 2006 - but he left one ovary in.
I started to have a dull ache a few months ago - ignored it as it really was just annoying, not painful, you know - just didn't seem like anything
Until I bled the other day then it felt like I was peeing razor blades. So, I went in, he cauterized the cyst that did pop - and sent me for an ultrasound.
This showed a 12cm cyst on the ovary -
I am having my last ovary out on Feb. 5, 2008.
He said this would put me in medical menopause, but that the hormone options today are so much better even than they were a year and a half ago, that I should be fine.
He said cysts are common - to the this size, not so common - and getting to a dangerous size for rupture or for twisting.
Don't be nervous. If you think you need one, get a 2nd opinion. The CA125 test is a good idea in the meantime.
Mine was already done. Found out today that it was a 13. He said that is fine, 0 - 35 is normal.
Good luck!!!!!

Yes I been over menopause for six years and now I have prolased uterus....need hyso for it...just when ya think your done it grabs ya back again....I have to have ultra sound for groin pain too....
I'm also menopausal (age 55) and found that I too have a cyst (7cm) on my left ovary and a plum-sized fibroid in my uterus. Surprise! I had no idea. My CA 125 test came back in the single digit range. That's not a decisive indicator however. I thought my female organs were hibernating now so to speak. So this was a shock to me. I'm going in next month for a laparoscopy to remove the one cyst. As for the other stuff, I guess she'll decide once she's in there and tests the ovary. Looks like we're not out of the woods yet. And here I was celebrating menopause. No more monthly problems. Ha!
