oophorectomy and hysterectomy

I am  planning on having my ovaries removed because of ovarian cancer family history.  I am 50 so I am not concerned about kids anymore.  My doctor suggested I might want to consider having a hysterectomy at the same time.  I am trying to find out the benefits or the risks  of also having the hysterectomy.  I know the recoup time may be longer - but are there other reasons not to have the hysterectomy also?

Hi,
I had ovarian AND uterine cancer, at the same time.  Boy, I wish I'd had a hysterectomy younger!  If it were me, I'd have my uterus removed in a jiffy.  Recovery really isn't bad at all.

Hi there,

Since you are having your ovaries removed, I don't think keeping your uterus will be much benefit.   I am sure you doctors knows much more about it than I do, but, if it were me and I had decided to have the ovary removal surgery, I would remove the other stuff too at the same time.  I think since you are menopausal age that you will likely have few issues.  As Angie said above, Hystersisters is a great site with a wealth of knowledge on the subject.  Good luck to you!

Hello, it's great that your doctor is thinking of your future and having prevention surgery.  I wish I new more on the benefits and cons, but I do know a great web site: hystersisters.com , they focus on hysterectomys, surgery types, treating side effects, etc.  They also have a free booklet they will send you on the topic.  Good luck on finding what you need, take care, Angie
