ovarian IV- ascites and liver discomfort

My mom was just diagnosed with probably stage IV. She has ovarian cancer, ascites, omentan caking, and discomfort in her liver. her doctor says the ascites is coming from her liver and that it has probably metastized to her liver already. Ascites and liver discomfort are the main signs, also she cant kick a pnemonia for 6 weeks, 2 rounds of antibiotics. He says could be in her lung too. Im really worried what the prognosis is?

Lillian,
I too was diagnosed with stage IV ovarian cancer that had spread to my liver. After my initial surgery, I recieved what is called radiofrequency ablation to remove tumors in my liver. I do not really know what they have found in your mom, but this might be something worth looking in to. I also later developed slight ascities but chemo helped to get rid of most of it and keep it under control. And as Janice said, the fluid in her lungs might also be ascities. I have also recently developed the same thing. So I am starting new chemo tomorrow to try and get rid of it.
I wish your mom the very best and please keep us informed as to what you find out.
    Chris
PS, It has now been 3 1/2 years since I was diagnosed and I am doing good.

Hi, I'm sorry your Mom is having to deal with this.  My mom was diagnosed Stage IV in Oct 2007.  Your moms symptoms/issues seem similar. They thought my mom had pneumonia, because she had fluid in her lungs.  It was really fluid from the ascites...and there was no pneuomonia.  The ascites can spread to the lining of the lung from the abdomen.  The ascites build up was from my moms ovaries and omentum.  Has your mom seen an oncologist?  What are her next steps?  They treated my mom with chemo prior to surgery to reduce the ascites. Once they operate, they can tell thru the pathology reports the source of the cancer. There are many people that are stage IV that thru treatment, keep the cancer from spreading for many, many years.  Prayers to your mom and you. I know this is scary, this forum has lots of supportive and good info. Best wishes and let us know how she is doing. Janice
