It is my understanding that my ascites was caused by peritoneal carcinomatosis (due to my ovca) which means extensive, or very widespread, metastasis of cancerous tumors onto the inside surfaces of the abdomen.  They drained fluid from my abdomen the first time the day after my diagnosis (non-surgical diagnosis) in part to confirm a suspected malignancy in the fluid, and the paracentesis offerred immediate relief.  I had even more drained a week later the day before my first chemo tx--again great relief.  By my 2nd tx, the fluid was completely gone.  I hope if you are going through this you can find the relief I did.  Paula

Ascities is a disorder in which there is excessive fluid that accumulates in the abdominal cavity. Ascities may be caused by cirrhosis, alcoholic hepatitis and obstruction of the hepatic veins. Failure of the kidneys and failure of the heart can both lead to excessive generalized fluid accumulation. Cancer involving the abdominal cavity and tuberculosis involving the abdominal cavity can both produce ascities.
Cancer does not always cause it, wvweryone reacts differently.
