ovarian cancer vs. endometriosis

I am 41 years old. No history of ovarian cancer. My sister had uterine fibroids and had a total hysterectomy. My other sister has ovarian cysts that are being watched. I always had regular periods up until july 2005. I only get my period every four months or so now. My Obgyn did an ultrasound (abdominal) because of my absent periods. I had no other symptoms other than my abdomen kinda distended but I thought I had just gained some weight. I have ovarian cysts on both of my ovaries. One is 15 cm and the other is 12 cm. My ca-125 was only 24. I had a ct scan on sept. 11 and I have a follow up appt tommorow. I'm really nervous. The Doctor said it could be endometriosis. Does anyone have any insight on this???

Hi I am 45 years old and my doctor thought that I had endometriosis or endomtriomas in at least one ovary (left).

We decided to do surgery because of symptoms (bloating, pelvic pain, constipation, fatigue).

During surgery they found out the left ovary had both endo and a borderline tumor, right ovary endo.
So he removed everything (which he would have done if it was just endo, that is what my doctor likes to do to prevent reoccurance. All docs are different).

No other suspicious or malignant cells found so I need no chemo or anything.

Generally if there are cysts in both ovaries it is not malignant, it is most likely endo.

It is kinda rare to have what I had, but I wanted to mention it.
I don't mean to scare you though. A borderline tumor is the least malignant, least invasive type, with great prognosis (nearly 100% survival). My doctor said if you had to have any kind of OvCa, this was the best (sounds very weird to say such a thing).

Yours is probably endo or benign cysts. Remember that most cysts are benign.

Just to be safe, make sure you get a referral to a Gynocologic Oncologist to do any surgery.
They have 3 years of extra training and specialize in treating gynocologic disorders, they do not deliver babies. They are usually excellent surgeons and will know what to do during surgery. Don't have a regular Ob/Gyn do the surgery no matter how much you like him or her.

Everything will be ok. Good luck.
