Oh yeah, I'd want that baby out of there. If you are in/near a big city. See if there are any gyn cancer support groups at teaching hospitals or National Cancer Institute approved facilities. Just a precaution, but the ladies in those groups will know who the
best gyn-onc surgeons are just in case. Given the size I'd want a good gyn-onc involved. Hey, the ladies will love this. My gyn-onc removed a 19cm ovarian cyst, no mets, thought it was benign, closed me up. THEN the pathology came back. Ooooops.
Never try to second guess a cyst. That's why I say a GOOD gyn-onc. Actually he did a
great job, no pain, got everything (the second time). Oh, don't go by CA-125 alone, mine never went over 15 with the MEIA assay. Do get a baseline CA-125 and the other one (????) prior to surgery. All the best, sorry to be a little graphic.
I also have a pretty big cyst on my ovary and am having the laparotomy (open) surgery.
They want to make sure it doesn't rupture. My cyst is called a dermoid cyst, and they are usually not cancerous. Your wife may have a CA125 test to help determine whether the cyst appears malignant or benign.
I am impressed that you would find this forum and ask questions. You must be worried, and a very good partner for your wife. (Feel free to show her this post!) lol

I think it's unusual for the doctor to be asking you to decide what type of surgery he should do. I had a 10 cm cyst on my ovary. My doctor told me she would try to remove it by scope but if she couldn't, then she would do the laparotomy. Plus she took precautions during surgery to avoid spilling any of the contents of the cyst into my abdomen. She made all the decisions and then informed me so I would know what to expect. One thing that is not an option is to do nothing (she told me that too).
Hi,
I think you need to find out some information on this cyst such as , What type it is, what are the chances that it is malignant, is it safe to remove a cyst that size with a laporoscopy oppossed to laparotomy because of spillage etc. I would also be asking if a gynaecologic oncologist will be on hand in case any cancer is found during surgery. Most cysts turn out to be benign and only approx 5% are cancerous but that can,t be determined until the cyst has been biopsied.

DON'T know what type of a cyst it is...doctor said has to be removed...either through leproscopy or traditional surgery...the doc has asked me to choose one of them...i am confused..
Hi ,
What type of cyst is it ? it certainly is very large and if it has to be surgically removed then most surgeons would remove it with a laparotomy (abdominal incission). What has the doctor said abouit it ? . Need more information .
Hope all goes well Angie
