pain after hysterectomy/omentectomy

My mother in law had a total hysterectomy on 7/13/09, they also removed her omentum. She has been complaining about beating feeling in her upper abdomen (some might describe it as a nervy feeling) She was diagnosed stage 3 with ovarian cancer, her colon had to have almost 8 inches removed but thankfully she didn't need a colostomy bag. Her appendix and lymph nodes were removed and were found unremarkable. (I take this to mean no sign of abnormalities) The only pain she is complaining about is where I mentioned before. Her doctor said it's where he had to tie something into a knot. The doctors head nurse said it has to do with the sutures after the omentectomy. Needless to say my mother inlaw is concerned about the sensation. She's tried not to use her pain meds as often, fearing the constipation that they can bring on but the pain is bad enough that she needs to medicate. Any info someone can give would be greatly appreciated. Thank you and God bless!

Hi There,

I suspect that the main issue here is that your mother in law is under medicated for pain after a huge abdominal surgery.
It is common to have pain from the incision, from gas moving through the bowel, and from adhesions.

It is important to be evaluated for infection and hernia. If her physical exam is normal and her labs are normal, she most likely has postop pain.  I sometimes also check a CT scan of the abdomen to be sure I am not missing a deep infection or fluid collection .

But the treatment is time, rest, no heavy lifting, and pain medication. It can take up to six months for uncomfortable and painful abdominal sensations to resolve.
best wishes

Thanks so much for the response labs were normal and she was instructed to take pain meds on a regular schedule now she has developed a new pain which came on sudden and extreme it's in her lower right rib area. Her Doctor ordered an xray which came back normal and has now ordered a bone scan of the area. I'm so glad I found this site!
