test results....help understanding it
OK. My ultrasound results are a 15cm X 14cm X 11 cm right ovarian complex mass, with calcifications and surrounding debris. My CA 125 is 19.9. I am scheduled for surgery on 10/29/07.
To have a full abdominal surgical proceedure. I'm 51.
What does the CA 125 indicate ? Chances that it is malignant verses benign ???

Waiting for surgery is the worst, most impotent feeling. After reading posts here, I feel both lucky and impowered that my HMO sent me right to gyn-oncology after the results of my ultrasound.

It sounds like you have had a good evaluation and the plan for surgery is just right. Thank you for the complete information.
You have some kind of tumor on the ovary.
The possibilities of what it could be range from benign tumors such as a dermoid (which is the most common ovarian tumor that comes from the egg cell. Your brother had the malignant version of it.)
It could be a benign tumor that comes from the lining of the ovary.
It could be a malignant tumor that is slow growing such as a borderline tumor or it could be an invasive cancer.
Most tumors are benign but ultimately until it is removed and evaluated , you do not know. I can only guess that waiting for surgery must be really hard.
CA 125 test measures a protein in the blood that it secreted by some tumors. Not all tumors make CA1 25. A CA 125 result does not help give you a diagnosis.

I keep adding info. Sorry, but after reading, I realize that I should have been more through.
I am peri-menopausal, only 2 periods in the past year, one last month, and one 8 months ago. I've always had weird periods. At 14, I had periods that wouldn't go away, had 2 d and c's then took ortho novum 1/80.s for years. Then 10 years later, no periods without the pill. I was on hormone therapy, clomid, and other stuff to menstrate.
I had one child, one pregnancy, at 37. With a bit of infertility work then.
I have had stabbing pain in my abdomen, that felt like middlesmertz, but kept happening. Then my right side felt bloated, and heavy. I went in for a pelvic,and asked for an ultrasound, due to my mom's cancer.

Forgot to add, that my mom died from ovarian cancer, 5 years ago, and oddly enough, I have a brother who had a malignant teratoma some 30 years ago, which was successfully removed and with chemo and radiation he is 47 years old now.
