Do you know if her cancer is estrogen receptor positive?  That is usually the type of ovarian cancer Tamoxifen would be used for.  I cannot take it because I am prone to blood clots, but I do take Femara, a similar drug.  Is there any way you can go to her next appointment with her and talk to her doctor?  Maybe you can get some clarification on what her doctor intends to do, and if she is telling the truth.  Best of luck to you both,

Gail

Hi,
I'm on a newer drug.  It's called Aromasin.  It is in clinical trials right now for Ovarian cancer.  It's supposed to be much, much more effective than Tamoxifen at helping breast cancer not to come back. It stifles the amount of estrogen in the body so that cancers which are dependent on estrogen basically starve.
I have joint pain from it, but I only take it every other day, so it's not too bad.  Please have your mom do research online about it.  Best of luck to her.

I am on tamoxifen since 7/07 and was doing fine.  It appears to have stopped working so I will be changing to ???.

It was an easy med for me ... my MD had me take 10MG twice a day with my only side effect being hot flashes.

A friend was taking 20 MG once a day and had bone pain ... she switched to 2 10mg pills and is doing fine.

It only works for 11% of ovarian patients.

Good Luck

Hi
Tamoxifen is used for ovarian cancer - more as a maintenance thing rather than a cure according to how it was explained to me.

I took it for about six months but it didn't work for me and I had very sore joints as a side effect which made my life miserable.

Everyone is different of course and what doesn't work for me often works for other people.  There are various side effects to tamoxifen but on the whole it is a fairly safe drug so I would consider it worth trying for your Mom (that is purely my opinion and not a qualified medical opinion of course :-))
