unable to urinate much and pain the bladder lower right groin area post surgery

nwk
I just had laparoscopy three days ago. After the surgery I couldn't urinate so they put a catheter into my bladder with leg bag and told me to go home. The catheter is really uncomfortable. I had itching and pain in my uretha area. My stomach area also feels really heavy and feels unattached stretching pain while I move. I remove the urinary catheter tube off last night myself. Irritated pain afterwards but went away. My back was also so uncomfortable lying on my back so I sleep on my side which seemed to made things worse in morning. I can pass a bit of urine on my own now but not much. I am afraid It might leave my bladder full evetually since I can not fully urinate on my own. But really hoping not to ask the doctor to stick the catheter in my again.  Also having dull pain in my right groin or bladder area today.

Anyone had this kind of experience post surgery?? any advice is much appreciated!!

My daughter has this problem because of her cancer, what you probably have is prolapse of the either uterus or bladder, both can cause urinary difficulties, call an urologist  and get to see them ASAP, go to the ER at your local hospital and tell them this, have them get a hold of the urologist for you.  what they put in you was called a pessary  and sometimes they work and sometimes not.  You need this taken care of quickly  before it damages your kidneys.    a prolapsed uterus and or bladder is very comman in older women. Good Luck  marty

Hi, my name is Andrea and I'm a senior.  I hope someone out there can help me as I'm so desperate and depressed, I don't see any point in living.  To make it short, my inability to urinate started about 4 years ago after surgeries.  It is now so bad that I am unable to urinate on my own, or only a few drops.  My GYN doctor said I might need a colon and bladder surgery as they literally fell down, but first she put a device inside me to see if surgery would help, doing the same thing (put  bladder and colon back into place).  Well, it didn't help, actually made it worse.  Saw my doctor today and she put a new device in and now I can't go to the bathroom anymore at all.  I'm severely depressed now and don't know what to do.  I can't live like this much longer.  Nobody knows what to do.

Does anyone know of a doctor or anyone who would know anything about this?  I would appreciate any comment or helpful hint as I just can't go on living like this.

Thanks,Andrea

Hi...just wanted to let you know that Uristat is a wonderful thing. I have only had two bladder infections in my life and one sent me to the pharmacy at 3 a.m. to get an antibiodic called in by my doctor. Luckily the doctor had told me about the Uristat which can be purchased over the counter. It give immediate relief from the pain while the antibiotics kick in. Possible you have a urinary tract infection.

Good luck and I hope you are feeling better soon. Mary

If you are unable to go to the bathroom, you probably should call your doctor.  Is your stomach hard and swollen?  After my laproscope last year, I had problems going to the bathroom, hard swollen stomach and a fever.  If you develope these symptoms go to the ER ASAP!!  I ended up having paratanitis because they pulled out my urter tube from my bladder during surgery (this is quite common I later found out).  Otherwise, try pouring warm water over yourself when you try to go (The nurses told me to do this after my surgery last year).  Please keep us informed of how things are going.  Kasie

haven't heard of Uristat, but someone suggested on this site to pour warm water over yourself when you go, because that will a) stop the buring feeling, and b) encourage your system to go. (I posted a catheter question right after my sx, and had that response)
I also found that running the water in a trickle in the sink helped. I know that sounds silly... but we all react to the running water sound, and it made me want to go more.
Luckily that end is back to normal... but BM's are still difficult over a week out from surgery. You could have something in the colon pressing on everything. And the gas thing is totally correct too... there could be gas pressing on a section of your bladder and not allowing you to go all the way.
There is a combo product I've been using... it's Maalox and Gas-X liquid. Gets rid of both problems at once (and not as nasty tasting as some :)
Keep in touch, and hopefully this starts to improve!

Drank lots of water, but still urging pain when I try to urinate. If I don't urinate then there is no pain or irration. Drink a full glass of water only 1/4 comes out. I am taking Nitrofurantoin for urinary track infection just in case. Have anyone heard of Uristat to help Relieves pain during urination??

After surgery (laproscopy) I got them to take me to the bathroom while in recovery, and was able to pass a little bit on my own. Got home, and for roughly the next two days I was only able to go a little bit at a time. A nurse friend of mine recommended Vagisil (since it has lidocaine in it) for the irritation. Won't heal it, but will make it hurt less. Plus, if you do go, it won't burn. Keep drinking water, since the water will dilute everything and as your bladder muscles come back under your control it should get easier.
If it doesn't after a few days of this, though, go see your dr. Just in case. Better to be safe and have a copay then sorry later.
