Anti Nausea Meds

Just got a call from my friend who is  post first treatment ( 3rd day). She is tonite extrememly ill with nausea and headache . Zofran nor Emend    bring relief. I take Zofran prn during chemo, along with the E  the first 3 days and have not had much of a problem. Is there something else out there aside fro Compazine, Zofran,  Emend that she may speak to Doc about? Thanks in advance.

Nothing worked for my mom, even Zofran which we had to purchase...without insurance...for nearly $1,000 per week (as you can expect she went without when outpatient)...IV, pill, etc....no relief.  The only time she did was the use of a G-Tube (surgical tube into the stomach) to drain that fluids...but that is extreme (but also common)...route to take if the meds that were talked about in this thread do not work.  Aloxi (as mentioned) is one of the newer ones and does last a while...but some insurance may not like it (unlikely though)...Zofran is now basically generic (yet still expensive w/o insurance) and they are working on others.

Needless to say, your medical team needs to come up with solutions for you...it's frustrating that many don't seem to concerned and just fill out prescriptions.  Although most of what you are experiencing is due to chemo and cancer, there are other things you can do such as food, relaxation, etc, etc...many things will trigger nausea.  NCI has an excellent book on nutrition for cancer patients (and many other FREE books)...the online version of the nutrition book is here:  http://www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/eatinghints

They give everyone in my oncs office IV Zofran, but after being in the hospital after every Gemzar treatment I put my foot down and INSISTED on the Aloxi.  I have used it through the Topotecan and now Doxil & Carbo and it has made a huge difference.  Zofran pills are a preventative as are phenergan pills, in that they work better if you take them before you become nauseous or sick, but the Phenergan Supp work very quickly for that nausea that just won't go away.  They make me sleepy so I try to avoid, but sometimes a nap is better than being up heaving your guts out.   I really do feel for your friend.  There is a list of the types of people  & experiences that make some more prone to nausea, but in addition to those I have found that those who are claustrophobic, afraid of heights, and get motion sickness easily are also more prone to it. Good luck to your friend honey and just encourage her to keep trying stuff until she finds what's right.  She doesn't have to be miserable.
