3.6cm ovarian cyst

I am new here.  I am 26 years old.  I am working on getting scheduled for hip surgery.  The dr I am seeing wanted to do a MRI on my hip because of all my previous hip surgeries.  What he found was discouraging.  He found a 3.6cm cyst in on the left.  I had back surgery earlier this year and I just figured the back pain was from my surgery and I cont to have issues there that need surgical treatment in the future.  I only have one child and he will be 2 in january.  My issues started after he was born.  I have been on several different kinds of birth control since then.  I started 8 weeks after childbirth.  3 months into the birthcontrol, I was having 2 period.  One at the end of the pack and one in the middle of the pack.  So I spoke with my ob about this and she changed me to something else.  I started the new one.  I waiting about 3 months before I called the ob again and it was doing me the same way.  Well this time she increased the dose.  I don't bleed in the middle of the month but I feel as if my hormones are totally screwed up.  I have horrible headaches, bloating, and low back pain, and of course hip pain (which has nothing to do with this).  What are usually the symptoms and what do they do for the cyst.  I have never had any issues with cyst.   I just hope it don't delay my hip surgery.   What did other ob's do?  I am a nurse and when I looked at my MRI it kinda of scared me.  Of course, it was not what I was expecting.  I knew the hip stuff would be bad but now this.

I don't think there is anything to worry about.  I have been through so much already this year to add something else to it.   My fear is that they will want to wait until they get the work up on my ovaries to do the hip surgery.  The hip is the most important thing to me right now.  I am having a  very hard time walking.  I am working full time as a nurse, trying to raise my son (22 months old) while my husband works out of town, and trying to take care of everything around the house.  I am both mentally and physically worn out.  I am going to call OB on monday to set up an appt to just get a work up and that way things get rolling.  I just want my hip fixing so I can function again without hurting so bad.  My dr hasn't seen the results of my MRI yet.  He is out of town doing some kind of certification.  He won't be in the office I am going to until Wed.  I know all about the constipation I work with narcotics all of the time.  I work as a nurse in a pain clinic.  We usually give Miralax or Amitiza.  They seem to work the best for us.  I am using Miralax as needed.  I really want to know what the size of the cyst is the descrepancy between 3.6 and 6 is alot.  As long as it just resolves itself, I will be great.   Thanks for the answers.  It just helps ease my mind a little.

Hi,
It would seem from the report that they're suggesting the follow-up in 2-3 months to see if the cyst resolves itself.  What does your doctor advise at this point, and has he referred you to a gyn. In young women cysts are fairly common and can go away in a few cycles, and it's called watchful waiting. The  meds your taking for pain can have a lot to do with your bowel irregularity. They tend to constipate and to help this you can try using some stool softeners and eating a higher fiber diet. I've had to take them for a long time due to a failed back surgery so I know how confusing it can get when you have several issues all going on in the same area and it's hard to know where the symptoms are coming from. My cyst wasn't helping and now that's it's been removed I've had better luck in that department, but I'm still making sure to eat a few prunes everyday just to keep regular.
I agree with Trudie, the headaches could be coming from the change in the hormone levels with the BC pills. It's a good idea to also check out the cyst information too.
I would find out what the plan for the cyst is from your doctor, and then see if it's fine to go ahead with the hip surgery as long as you'll be able to have the tests repeated in a few months. He can also find out about the size discrepancy in your report and what type of cyst it is.
Keep us updated in your progress and good luck
Valerie

The hip thing is chronic I have dealt with it since I was 11 yrs old.  The cyst is on the left and all of my hip pain is on the right.  The MRI didn't really say what kind of cyst it is.
Here is what it said:

Frequent 6 cm leftt adnexal cyst.  Follow up pelvic sonogram is suggested in 2-3 menstrual cycles to confirm resolution.  Blooming artifact within the lower uterine segment which may represent a calcified fibroid, or postsurgical change.  IUD is much less likely.  Uterine fundus is deviated into the left hemipelvis.

I really don't know the size because on down it says 3.6cm so which one is it.  I haven't had any surgery but a c-section on my stomach.  I have had a pulling in my stomach when I go to roll over in the bed and cramping which I just figured the birth control wasn't strong enough.  I have been on pain meds since the first of this year because I have had 2 back surgeries and now hip surgery (I hope) so bowel habits irreguarity I just assumed was normal.

Hi there.  It can be pretty scary when you are told you have a cyst but we can help.  Do take a look at the health pages (top right) where this is good information about cysts and their symptoms.  When I had mine I had frequent gas, urinary urgency, change in bowel habits, bloating, abdominal pain, back pain, and groin and leg pain.  Your headaches could be from the birth control pills (I get awful headaches so can't take it) and it is possible cyst is contributing to your hip pain.

Did they indicate what type of cyst they think it is?  Depending on the type of cyst normally they will wait a couple of months and redo the transvaginal ultrasound to see if the cyst has resolved itself. If it hasn't they will likely schedule a laparoscope to take a look and remove the cyst and possibly the ovary if it has been compromised.

Good luck with everything.  Please keep us posted.
