4.8cm Complex Ovarian Cyst

I have been dealing with simple ovarian cysts my entire life (that cause me a lot of pain).  I am probably in the ER every 3-4 months with excrutiating abdominal pain (usually the right side).  When I go in, they say "it's probably just a cyst that burst" and send me home.  I recently found a doctor that has me do an U/S every 6 months.  This last U/S showed a 4.8cm complex cyst which was not there 3 months ago (this is all the paperwork said).  The recommendation from whoever read the U/S is that I get another one done in 6 weeks.  My doctor seems worried because I was just in the ER 2 weeks ago with unbearable pain, nausea, vomiting, diareah, no appetite, frequent urination (they ruled out that it was my appendix and sent me home).  I'm waiting for my doctor to send an "urgent" referral to a gyn because she thinks I should have it removed due to all the pain and symptoms.
I still haven't gotten a call for my referral and am getting nervous thinking about it.  My mom had these exact problems when she was younger and had to have a full hystorectomy at a very young age.

I believe this is my first cyst.  It is 4.8cm on my right ovary.  The pain, nausea and bloating is driving me crazy.  I too suffer from very painful periods.  Extreme back pain and double over pain.  My OB told me last year "Oh, well they get worse when you get older.  There are three things you can do.  Two will make you sterile and the third is birth control pills."
I don't take bc pills because of the side effects.  How long do cysts usually last?  The ct scan I had does not say what kind of cyst.

If you are experiencing pain and/or any of the other symptoms above, I would insist that you get an appointment sooner! I went into the ER with pain and they scheduled me in 10 days later for a removal. Sometimes you just have to be really insistent and advocate for your care. Good luck!!!

Thanks for the response.  I'm starting to feel crazy!  I've decided to keep a journal on here because reading through others experiences has been helping me feel less crazy.
I guess I'm hoping for reassurance that it's not "all in my head" and to let others in my situation know they aren't alone.

I suffered with severe pain during menstruation. The crippled over kind. I hate hearing how you have to suffer in pain. I hope you get your referral soon. I just had a 10cm complex cyst which turned out to be an endometrioma removed. Even with the large incision I feel better. I had it removed by an awesome gyn/oncologist. (long island,ny) still have uterus and other ovary. If given the option, have it removed. If the other ovary is fine you can still maintain your fertility. Pray for all the best for you.
