Complex ovarian cyst

Just wanted some advice from other people who have had complex ovarian cysts.  I have a complex ovarian cyst now measuring 3.5 cm on my right ovary with two thickened septations.  Mid March it measured 4.5 cm and it looked part cystic and part solid.  I went through the whole Ovarian Ca work-up which so far turned up negative.  CT scan was clean and Ca-125 was 10.  My GYN suggested that I consult a GYN/Onc to see if he feels that I could wait and see or it looked suspicious for Ovarian Ca.  GYN/Onc told me I could repeat the pelvic U/S in 8-10 weeks.  That sounds all fine and dandy coming from a GYN/Onc but I'm still experiencing symptoms of fullness in my abdomen, bloating, gas and achiness in my right back and down my right thigh toward my right groin.  My GYN thinks that these symptoms are related to something else and not the cyst.  He also said that 3.5 cm is not bigger than an almond and that it shouldn't be given me so much discomfort.  I don't think I can wait 8-10 weeks to see if I need surgery or not.  Should I get another GYN opinion?  How soon after the sono in April can or should I have another U/S.  The symptoms I'm having are really bothersome and I also would like to do surgery before the summer and also before the cyst continues to get bigger.  What puzzles me the most is that my GYN said to me that if I had a "virgin abdomen" he would have taken the cyst but because of my prior surgeries he doesn't want to rush into surgery unless absolutely necessary.  I need advice on what to do?  Should I wait and see or just ask my GYN to book surgery? Thanks Anna

Hi, my name is Amy, I'm 26, and yesterday 4-1-09 I went to the ER because I couldnt get an appt. with any ob Dr. until July. I am experiencing the same thing; gas all day, bloating and cramping in my lower abdominal area. They said I have a complex cyst on my left ovary that measures 3 inches. Me and my husband just started trying to concieve 3 mnths ago. I have never had an irregular period before and in the past 2 mnths it came twice in one mnt. and lasted 7days in the other. I had pain during sex too. I thought well maybe i could be pregnant because I have never experienced bloating after my period etc. The doctors said it should desolve on its own and to follow up in a few days. It's still makes me nervous though because its never happened to me before. So I would just relax and wait, thats all I'm gonna do for now. Good Luck! Amy

For the doc who said that 3.5cm is 'almond-sized and shouldn't be causing you pain', go pop him one upside the head for me! ;)
I have a cyst (dermoid or endo) barely larger than that (3.8ish), and I have right side pain, right lower backache, tingling over the ovary, gas pain, pressure, and the urge to pee frequently. Size doesn't matter... it matter's what the cyst is impacting. Mine is higher on the ovary. Maybe a low one wouldn't impact as much, but heck... those symptoms are dead on for cyst discomfort.
Gotta wait almost another month for mine to be removed, but I will be happy when my 'alien hairball' goes back to the mothership. :)
Hot baths and heat packs help with the side and backache pain... those Thermacare things work really well. 8+ hrs of nice heat, and keeps those muscles relaxed.

Get a 2nd opinion...that way you can talk with another professional on your concerns, which will help you understand the direction which you should go with this.  I was diagnosed with an 8cm. complex cyst(tumor), and am scheduled to go into surgery in 2 days to remove the tumor.  I am in a lot of pain, discomfort , and not to mention the emotional wreck I have been over the last 2 weeks.  If it were me---I would schedule to see another doctor to get some answers for you.

Thanks everyone for your advice.  I will be speaking to my GYN today to see what I should do.  Like I said I did have two previous surgeries.  The first surgery was done 3 1/2 years ago and it was gastric bypass surgery which I lost about 100+ lbs.  and this past October I had an umbilical hernia repair (where a mesh was put in) and a tummy tuck to take away the excess skin in my abdomen.  I know my GYN is concerned about the mesh that was put in to hold my hernia.  When this all started in mid March and he suspected I had cancer he did say that the General Surgeon that put in the mesh (who is the Chief of Laparoscopic surgery) where I work and himself and one of his associates who are experts in laparoscopic surgery and a GYN Onc. who would be on standby would have to all participate in the surgery.  Even with all these "experts" there is a chance that he would have to reopen me.  I understand his concerns but he also did say to me that he didn't want me ending up in the Emergency Room because since this is a more difficult surgery because of my prior history he would rather assemble the team and schedule surgery.  This was several weeks ago prior to my last U/S.  Now that the cyst appears smaller he wants to take the wait and see approach.  This is why I'm confused because like I stated before he did say that if it wasn't for my history he would have already taken out the cyst because he would prefer to know the true pathology of the cyst rather than not.  His exact words is that this cyst is an "ugly" cyst and not the usual ones that I form.  With all this in mind and the fact that I am symptomatic I'm not sure what to do.  Next week I do have an appointment with my General Surgeon who did the hernia repair and my Plastic surgeon who did the TT to get there opinions about all this.  I was also going to suggest to my GYN to set up surgery and I'll do another U/S prior and if cyst appears smaller then we can always cancel surgery rather than wait several weeks and then set surgery up.  Also, if my symptoms are not due to the cyst what are they do to?  If it's adhesions wouldn't they have to go in and see as well?  Who determines this and how can I be sure?  Again, I do not want to have unnecessary surgery but I also don't want this to drag on forever.  I can have repeat U/S till the cows come home but removing the cyst will definitely determine if my symptoms are due to that or not.  Again, thanks for everyones advice I really appreciate speaking to people who have been through this and more.  Anna

From what I have read, your symptoms could very well be cyst related.  Please seek a 2nd opinion with a gyn/onc.  They are specialists and have seen it all.  What may be an "ugly" cyst to your dr, may just be run of the mill to the gyn/onc.  Also please try to remember that 99% of ovarian cysts are benign. You are in my thoughts and prayers.  Godspeed

Perhaps your gyn might think you have adhesions from prior surgeries causing your pain?   8-10 weeks is a long time to wait for another ultrasound if you're nervous and in pain.  Maybe 3-4 weeks?  Regardless, if you're not comfortable waiting, don't be afraid to ask for a second opinion.   You know your body best!

I would definitely get another opinion, especially if you are having pain. Sounds like your cyst is getting smaller. Did the gyn say it might resolve on it's own as it seems to be getting smaller? What other surgeries have you had? I have a 2 cm cyst on my right ovay and the gyn said to wait a month a do another ultrasound. But if I wanted, he would take it out even though he didn't recommend it. Maybe if you push it, you can get the surgery done.
