Distended Stomach and Constant Pain

Hello Everyone. For a few weeks, I have been doing nonstop research about ovarian cysts and I constantly came across this site. I feel as if I need some opinions or some help, so please help me if you can. I am 21 years old and a college athlete that's trying to finish up my senior year in a few months.
Ten months ago I was put on LoEstrin 24 because I had been having some painful breast cysts that came and went, I constantly get them checked out, and my doctor said that that birth control would help. So as soon as I started this pill, I stopped having periods. As an athlete my periods were never regular, and i constantly felt nervous, but I didn't start worrying until 7 months went by without a spot or anything. So I went back to my doctor and he put me on Femcon FE- which was supposed to give me my period. Still, nothing had happened, but I knew you had to give it some time for your body to adjust, so I lived my life like normal. Pregnancy tests came back negative. Then I started getting terrible pain about three weeks ago to this day. It is in the lower right quadrant of my stomach.. and for three months now.. my stomach has been so distended and bloated nonstop that it's starting to affect the clothes I wear, I can no longer work out because of the pain that I get moments after, walking causes me to double over at times because of the sharp pain, I can no longer comfortably wear jeans, and even laying down i feel as if something is going to burst. Also, I get even worse pains when I urinate or have a bowel movement.
So after this terrible sharp pain started coming nonstop, I went to the doctor and they found at 7 cm x 6.5 cm cyst in my right ovary. Last year at this time, there was a 7 cm cyst in the same ovary but it resolved prior to surgery as a result of a new birth control. However, I never had this type of pain, the struggle, or the misery that I am having right now. I no longer feel like myself, I hardly sleep, and I can't help but wonder what is really happening to me. I also found out yesterday that this cyst is a complex cyst.
I have an appointment for yet another ultrasound and follow up on Monday. but.. I just wanted to see if any other woman has experienced this. I know I'm not alone. but for a 21 year old, I am terrified because none of my girlfriends can even come close to understanding the misery I'm in right now.
Thank you.. I appreciate your time!!

I went to gp and i have had an ultrasound external and internal. My left ovary is larger than the right and i have 2 cysts on my left ovary both measure above 3.5cm plus one is bleeding. The doc was just fobbing me off telling me they are common and cone and go and said to just leave it and it be fine. but i insisted i need referral to get checked. Have i done right ? I suffer with abdominal pain, back pain frequent urination, difficulty with bm, and have a huge swollen stomach looking 7 months pregnant. And i am tired all the time. Have the coil. And just generally very uncomfy.  Clothes are very tight now and i cant bend forward to fasten laces without a struggle ... stomach gets in way. Have i done the right thing asking for a gyne refferal and what will happen ??? Thankyou

I am 21 years old have been experiencing extreme bloating with lots of hardness in the belly, upper and lower, pain mostly on my lower right side, the bloating goes up and down but has been consistant for months now. most of the time I look 6 months pregnant and my boyfriend has just gotten used to it. =( I am athletic, I work out and eat very healthy (mainly vegan) and usually weight about 130-134 but now I weigh myself and its more like 146-149  =( I also have some lower back pain (always have) and hip pain and serious fatigue and some nausea at random times. I am not on birth control but have been on tons of different **** in my past. (I stopped taking bc about two years ago) (i am not pregnant)  I never considered ovarian cysts or cancer and now I am starting to freak out a bit. Last night I played some baseball and then got into a hot tub with friends for about an hour. I had to get out because the pain in my stomach and the bloat was too much to handle. when I got out I noticed some bleeding and felt horrible stomach pains. I couldn't even drive home. I know I need to go the doctor but do not have insurance right now. i am going to try the red hot peppers for awhile and see if that helps. although I am not ruling out cysts or cancer and am trying to stay positive. I doubt it is IBS because I have regular bm with no pain or constipation and clean my colon regularly and the bloat seems to even appear in the morning before I eat anything. When the bloating gets really big, it is hard, painful everywhere, hard to sit on the toliet (feels like my stomach is pressing down on my uterus) hard to sleep, hard to turn, generally feeling miserable and like I am going to explode.

Okay, looking for any help...  last Friday (it is now Monday) I went into the OBGYN b/c of severe abdominal pain and found out I had a ruptured ovarian cyst on my left side.  They told me that I also had some on my right side but they were going away.  They gave me pain medicine and sent me home.  Now Monday and my stomach is HUGE!  I look like I am pregnant.  I have also been weighing myself and I am up 8lbs. from last week.  I don't feel abnormally sick, just some pain in my back and abdomen and hips.  Anybody got a suggestion?  I am going to try to get back in today but who knows.  Why do we get to go through this???

I have been suffering from extreme bloating and pain since May of 2009.  I did have a cyst on my ovary that bled into my stomach and had to be removed.  After the surgery my stomach continued to get worse and worse. I went to the gynocologist and to my family doctor and to the gastroenterologist.  They told me I have IBS, although I did not have constipation or diarrhea.  I have gradually gained weight even though I am working out through the pain.  I am 31 and have never been on birth control and never will be.

Long story short about a month ago I discovered red peppers and my pain has gone away and slowly the bloating is going down.  I no longer look pregnant in the evenings!  I never have liked spicy foods because they make my nose run and my eyes water, but when you are in such pain that you can't sleep at night you will try anything.

You can get red pepper at a local Indian or Asian market.  They are typically red cayenne peppers and the hotter the better.  They are dried and a few inches long.  I cook them with chicken and rice in teriyaki sauce and try to eat around 3 or 4.  This has worked wonders for me and I am so excited to hear if it works for others.

Other things I have been doing to help improve my digestive system are the following:
No fast food! It should not be a part of anyone's diet.
Eat yogurt once a day every day with blueberries, strawberries or raspberries.
Take culturelle for 30 days to help build the good bacteria in your gut.
Cut caffeine and sugar as much as possible, I know this is a tall order and I have trouble with it.
Get enteric coated peppermint capsules to take occasionally for pain and bloating.  This has soothing properties.
Eat whole wheat or whole grain breads and rice, no multigrain.  You can get whole wheat tortillas, english muffins and bread.

I am on the road to recovery from this horrible thing that has been beating me slowly.  I felt like there was no hope just a month ago and my outlook now is much better.  Please let me know how this works for you if you try it.  Just remember that there is no magic pill and it will take time for your insides to heal and get right.  Give this a chance.  I hope this helps.

Just want to add to the ladies in telling you the bloating and pain are typical symptoms of a cyst. Glad to see your having the u/s done, as Irene says they might want to remove it for the reasons she has stated.
If you have it removed you'll feel so much better, so stay in touch and let us know what happens. There are many of us who have been through this and you'll get very good advice and information here. Good luck to you.

With a cyst that size, they will probably want to remove it. If it does break open, you're going to have terrible pain. And the size and weight of it could cause the ovary to flip and twist things in there which would lead to a medical emergency. So for now, don't do any intense workouts. Walking, possibly swimming might be fine. Mostly just wait to see what the next ultrasound shows. If you need to have surgery, stay in touch with us. Many have had surgery and can talk you through it.

Hi
I'm so sorry I can't offer much medical advice to you but I want to let you know that I totally empathize with your situation and wish you comfort and peace of mind. I, too, am an athlete and I had laparascopic surgery for the 1st time about 5 weeks ago. The whole experience freaked me out because I rely so much on my body as my "machine" and I always took great pride in making it stronger when I play sports. I am a triathlete, very dedicated to training, competing. Then I had the same problems you are experiencing....pain after exercising, bloatedness/distended stomach, etc.
I think that as an athlete we are very in tune with our bodies and conscious of when something is "amiss". But, speaking for myself, I know that sometimes I have a tendency to take this to an extreme and become obsessed with working out, even when my body seems to be telling me to slow down.
I hope you always continue to be athletic but also know when to listen to your body's warning signs. Being an athlete, to me, is such a great aspect of my life & when I had to stop training during this experience with my cyst, it devastated me. But I am back to swimming and running  now, 5 weeks after surgery, and feeling just as strong as before. I still have remnants of soreness in the area where the cyst was removed sometimes when I move a certain way.
Basically, I hope you realize what a great thing you are doing by being an active person. This will keep you in tune with your body, relieve stress, and rejuvenate you mentally & physically. Just listen to your body's warning signs so you don't over-do it.
Stay strong! I wish you all the best!

Yes, those symptoms are quite common with cysts.  I am glad you know your body and that you are getting this addressed.  I put on 10 lbs. with my cysts and looked 6 months pregnant.  I felt like a million bucks after surgery to remove it.  As you likely know, over 95% are benign but it is imperative for this to be removed just to be sure.  Good luck and please keep us updated.
