I Have An Endometrioma Ovarian Cyst

I had an MRI done 8 weeks ago and they found I have an endometrioma cyst on my right ovary. It is about 4.5 cm x 4.6 cm.

I am in pain right now. I am experiencing bloated lower abdomen with pain and pressure. I have to go urinate every hour. I feel lower back pain. I also feel numbness down both my legs. My lower abdomen is so tender I can't even wear pants right now. I have to wear a dress all the time.

Are these symptoms normal?

My gynecologist told me my condition is caused by endometriosis. He told me that I need to have a laparatomy done because it is a complex cyst.

But I have been told that I can also get a laparascopy done and it will be less painful and the recovery time is much faster.

Is surgery necessary? Are there any medications out there that I can take to shrink the cyst?

I had a softball sized endometrioma removed from my left ovary in January.  It was the first I'd heard that I had endometriosis at all.  I had it removed via laparoscopy.  Surgeon was able to remove the cyst itself and leave everything else in tact.  My first surgeon did not want to do it laparoscopically due to the large size, but went for a surgeon who specializes in this and he said it would be okay to do it that way and told me everything went really well.  It was done outpatient and I was home same day.  I guess you have to go with what your Dr. says, but if you really want laparoscopically, maybe get a 2nd opinion and try to see someone who does these routinely.  They are painful .... the symptoms I remember well and experienced all the same ones you are.  From what I learned, endometriomas will never go away on their own.....only surgery will remove them.  You will feel so much better when it is gone.  Good luck and keep us posted.

Hi there.  I had a 6 cm endometrioma on my left ovary and I had a laparotomy done last December since the doctor didn´t want to risk it since the CA - 125 marker was high and he didn´t really know it was an endometrioma.  He found out it was an endometrioma during surgery and was able to drain the endometrioma, did washings and I kept all my reproductive organs.  Then he gave me a 3-month Lupron shot to control the endometriosis and improve fertility.  Six months after surgery, there is no sign of any kind of cyst and I feel quite well.  The doctor says that I am doing great and he was glad because he had found a real mess, and now says that I should start trying to have kids ASAP due to my age and that I had an endometrioma.

As Sandy says, your doctor is the best one to make a choice about surgery.  Hope everything turns out well.

Best wishes,

Neta

Hi,

Sorry you're having these issues .. I wish I could tell you that there is a magic potion to make these cysts disappear , but there just isn't anything that I know of..

Regarding the Laparotomy vs the Laparoscopic procedure , your Dr. is really the best one to determine which one is appropriate for you. When are you scheduled for surgery?
Please keep us posted..

Sandy
