Incision bleeding after stitch removal

I went for my one week post -op visit today and the surgical resident did my exam, the surgeon was too busy. She said my incisions were healed inside and that the stitches would dissolve in a week or so, but that it was o.k. for her to remove them so it would be more comfortable. I told her they weren't bothering me, but she cut the stitches out of the 2 incisions and the outside skin wasn't closed on one of them.  I asked her to  please put something on it. She closed it with a steri-strip and said in a week to take it off and it should be closed. Tonight as I'm getting ready for bed, I see that it's bleeding a bit under the steri-strip. The other two incisions seemed fine, but this one was the one that had bleed a bit more post surgically, and it seems rather odd she would have done that when the outer skin hadn't knitted together yet. I'm going to call the clinic tomorrow and leave a message for my doctor, but I'm just wondering if this happened to anyone and what they did about it. I don't want to end up with a wider scar than I would have had if she had just left in the dissolving stitches, and I'm also afraid it may get infected now.
These resident doctors really need to check with the surgeon before they do these kind of things, and I'm kind of mad the surgeon didn't bother to come in and at least check me out for a minute. This is a clinic, so they use the residents for a lot of stuff if they're busy.
Thanks,
Valerie

I was seen by a nurse today from the VNS service as my calls to the clinic proved very frustrating. Neither my surgeon nor the resident who took them out ever called me back after I left a message with the doctor on call there today. The nurse said it's closing up and to keep the steri-strip on it, but that the resident shouldn't have removed the stitches as it wasn't really healed fully outside. The clinic doctor just said today if it hurts to come in and have looked at, but I would have been there for hours and I just did that the day on my appt. I put a big bandaid over the steri-strip cause it's already falling off and it pinches a lot, but it's not bleeding anymore and it's not infected so hopefully it will just heal up now.
thanks for all your concern, just shows you that even when you think your on top of things they still can get past you with something! Thank goodness it's minor but it proves how aware you need to be about everything as it's happening.
hugs to all,
Val

Wow...sorry to hear you have to go through that. It is understandable for you to be concerned. Seems weird that they would cut out dissolving stitches. It sure couldn't hurt to get it checked out...better safe than sorry. Maybe someone should ask that person why they took them out. Hope all is going to be ok...you have enough to deal with just to recover without adding extra worry. Keep us posted. God bless...Lynn

Thanks for replying to my post, I had dissolving stitches that were supposed to stay in until next Monday, when the surgeon had said they would just fall out on their own. I was surprised when the resident started cutting them when she was inspecting the incisions and then just plucked them out with the tweezer. That's when I saw the one wound was gaped open and I was concerned because she acted like it was no big thing, but I told her to cover it with a steri-strip to close the sides together. Tonight when I was getting ready to take a shower, I saw that there was a good amount of fresh blood under the strip. Then a part of the strip fell off so I covered it with a big band-aid, and tomorrow I'm calling the clinic to see if I should go there. I spoke to an on call resident by phone and she said if there's blood clotting it wont close properly, and so it needs to be looked at again. I'm glad to know yours is healing now even with the parts that gaped open, as I was getting very nervous about it and it hurts more now than it did when the stitches were in place.
hope you feel better soon too,
Valerie
