Large complex ovarian cyst

Hello there,
I had an u/s yesterday and they confirmed a very large complex cyst on my left ovary, 10x8 cm. The radiologist said that the chances of being malignant were very small but my gyn/oby is very concerned and wants to removed it asap.
The cyst grew in less than 5 months as I had another u/s in january and there was nothing there.
Does the fact that it grew so fast puts me at risk for cancer? I can't stop obssessing over it.
I am in pain and have gained about 15 lbs in the past 3 months, mostly on my abdomen. Has this happened to anyone?
Thank you in advance

In October of 2011 I had an ovarian cyst removed from my right ovary. It was done laproscopic. I just had an ultrasound last week and have a huge cyst on my right ovary again. I'm going to the doctor Wednesday and will have surgery shortly after. I hope all goes well for you

Hi pro728,
I read your post on Jul 18, 2009 04:40AM.
You did not feel pain or even weight gain? Well, since i was 15years old, i always feel my stomach bloated after every meal. Till at a point of time, year 2008, i always had the feedback from all my friends that they look at my stomach just like a 3-4 months pregnant woman which im not, and i always thought its normal for me. But i join this community and got the result of my cyst, i was shocked and totally unexpected at all.
Haiz... What a life... Besides, do you think it will affect my pregnancy in future? Im still young and want to have my own family. :(
Rgds,
Ida

I had my laparoscopy 2 days ago and the large cyst turned out to be simple for now, still waiting for pathology results on that.
There is no way to know if it's cancer until you have surgery. You need to see a specialist right away as your cyst is large.
I am still feeling weird so no more typing for now :0)
Good luck!

Hi,
As you mention, yours cyst is the size of 10x8cm and need to remove immediately. I'm sorry to hear that. But as for me, mine is 12x14cm. Which i still not sure whether it need to remove or not. As i have not met any specialist on this yet. It make me even more worried. Did your doctor say it will cause cancer? Sorry if my question is inappropriate.
Rgds,
Ida

Wow, that's hell of a story.

Your ca-125 sounds normal to me. I think you got recurrent cysts due to laparoscopy (from what docs say). Some cysts do recur. I am supposed to go for an U/S after 4 more months for a cyst in my other ovary. I have no idea about the medicines you are taking. But I don't think you have to worry about a surgery soon.

Cancer happens to anyone at any time. But ovarian cancer is very rare and if you are really worried call up your health care provider right away. It is no good to be tensed all along especially when you are being treated.

I am an Indian too and I used to live in CA and was treated at KP. If I were you, I would have sued them for leaving a sponge inside.

Hello

I had a ovarian cyst laproscopy on 20th dec 2006, it was 12 cm in size. I had my 1st baby born on march 12 2008 and I also had a simple cyst of 10 cm removed by C-section. I had the surgery at  Kaiser permanente, santa clara,CA. They left a sponge during my surgery and I had a laprotomy again on 5th april 2008 to remove that. After that I was having severe pain due to gall stone and I had an emergency surgery on april 23rd 2008(laproscopy) to remove my gall bladder.

After 1 year, I mean on april 2009, I found out to have frequent urination and UTI.
My u/s showed a 10 cm * 8cm cyst in my left ovary again.
I was on Lupron 3.75 mg shots till june;however, the cyst size is same. Now I am taking Loestrin 24 Fe.
I don't have any symptoms like abdominal pain, nausia or freq. urination now a days, I am feeling pretty normal. I had a CA125 test on april which was 20.
Do I need to worry about surgery soon?
I  need rest as I had several surgeries last year.
Is anyone  having problem like me?
Do I really need to woory about cancer? I a 32 years with only one kid and I am from India.
Please reply.

Good luck with your surgery.  I am scheduled for the same surgery but my doctor is also removing the ovary that it is connected to.  My cyst is 15 cm x 8 cm and my doctor said it has probably developed over the last year.  In the last year I have gained a little weight but have had mild back pain and nausea.  Sometimes a forign body in our bodies can cause nausea and other symptoms.  My surgery is scheduled for the 31 of July.  I am also 3 1/2 months pregnant and with this there are all sorts of risks.  I will have you in my prayers.

My appt went fine. Surgery will be in about 2 weeks.. Dr. is concerned about how fast the cyst grew and that is a complkex cyst. She said she will have a gyn/onc on stand by in case she finds malignancy. She thinks my .nausea and lighhead is due to stress and anxiet.
So, that it is. I am one step closer to being cyst free, hopefully.
Have a great evening!

I think there is a tendency for large cysts to be cancerous becauseI had a nearly 16 cm cyst and was asked to do CA-125 before they committed for laparotomy. I was told that it might have taken at least 6 months for it to grow to that size. I have no idea whether it meant speedy growth rate or normal. Anyway, cancer was 99% ruled after CA-25 result and the rest of the 1% depended on biopsy which proved it as benign. Ovarian cancer is a rare disease and most of the cysts are benign. Also, it is highly curable. An 80 year old relative of mine has taken the last shot of her injection (chimo?) and living up healthily for the op.

I have had no weight gain and no pain either. I used to swim, walk and exercise! But my tummy was a little big and I used to feel bloated after my meals.

I hope this info helps!

Chris,
thank you for your reply. My main problem with my dr is that she is hard to get ahold of to ask my many questions, so I am thankful for this website and talking to other women is empowering.
I will surely ask for a gyn/onc but am afraid my request will be dismissed like I have read in different posts here.
My appt is Tuesday to talk about surgery. i will post back.
Thank you!

I sent that before I was finished.  Well over 90% of cysts are benign so the odds are in your favor but please have a gyn/onc operate if a frank talk with your ob/gyn reveals they think your cyst might be malignant.  Best wishes, Chris P

I don't know about growth rate vs cancer risk - there is a cyst forum you might want to post that question on.  I believe that your symptoms could be caused by a benign cyst, but cancerous cysts also can cause these symptoms.  If your ob/gyn has the slightest suspicion you might have cancer please insist that you be referred to a gynecologic/oncolgist for your surgery.  They are specifically trained to deal with reproductive/gyn cancer issues and can stage you, do the appropriate pelvic washes and biopsies at the time of initial surgery.  They are also expert at containing the cancer and preventing spillage and potential spread.  Hopefully you are fine, but if you are not you want to give yourself the best chance possible to deal with it, and that is by having a gyn/onc operate.  It is better to have one operate and NOT have cancer, than to have the surgery with a regular ob/gyn and find out you DO have cancer.  That happened to me and many other woman on this forum, and we don't want it to happen to anyone else if it can be avoided.  We are not alarmisits - ovarian cancer can, and does, occur at any age, and it often occurs even when it is not initially suspected.
