Multiloculated Cysts

I was diagnosed in feb with multiloculated cysts after having a CT scan in the ER due to diverticulitis. Again I went to the ER for diverticulitis and a second CT scan was done and it showed the cysts are larger and they said that malignancy couldnt be ruled out.  Well the thing is, these ct scans did not get to my Gastro dr until I called the ER to have them sent to him, which was on 9/10/08.  I go to to my GI and he tells me that I need to go to a gyn-oncologist, because I have ovarian cysts.  I had a transvaginal ultrasound today, and the tech, said it looked like grapes.  That scares me.  I am wondering if that is a normal sounding cyst?

Persistent complex multiloculated multiseptated cystic ovarian mass is concerning. Make sure you see that gyn-onc doctor. MRI pelvis may of benefit for presurgical planning.

NO, it is NOT normal to have multiloculated ovarian cysts. I am only a medical student, so please refer to a doctor, but I am studying OB/GYN right now, and my textbook says that a uniloculated (ie single chamber) ovarian cyst is usually benign. In contrasts, a multiloculated (multiple chambers) cyst, could be cancer. Nearly all ovarian cancers are multiloculated, but not all multiloculated cysts are cancers. Nevertheless, the risk of cancer is present, and must be checked out. This is especially trues if you are past menopause, because women past the reproductive age rarely get cysts at all unless there is some pathology going on.

I'm sorry you're going through this and it is good you are working with a gyn-onc.  This doesn't mean you have cancer and over 95% of all cysts are benign.  Techs aren't supposed to say anything.  I had what my doctors thought was a 16 cm sized fluid filled cyst but ended up being a cluster of small cysts that had bled together.  So what you have can be very normal as far as cysts go.  Take a look at the health pages (top right) and there is some good info about cysts there.  Good luck and keep us posted.
