Ovarian Cyst Surgery Recovery

Hi,

I just wanted to let everyone know that my surgery to remove an ovarian cyst on my left ovary went very well & I'm on the road to recovery!  My abdomen is swollen and tender, and I have some lower back pain at times with a very "light" period, but that's about it.  I haven't had to have any pain medication since the surgery on Friday, April 7, but I may take some ibuprofen just to settle things now.  I didn't have to have the ovary removed, but the cyst was twisted around the fallopian tube, so the doc had to snip the tube to release the cyst & then I believe he just sewed it back up.  He said that the blood flow was being cut off & that's what caused me the pain I was experiencing prior to surgery.  I'm glad I had the cyst removed cuz I doubt it would have un-twisted on it's own w/o rupturing first. My doc said I should be able to go back to work in 3 days!  Heck, that would be today & I definitely don't think that is realistic, and I only work part-time!  Luckily I made arrangements to go back after 5 days, but I'm sure I'll be a tad slower than usual.

my cyst weighed around 12 pounds. my doc. did a full hysterectomy and i am in the 4th week of recovery. they had to cut a vertical 9 inch incision. i have alot of back pain that comes and goes because the cyst had disturbed my digestion and bowels. my body is now snapping back to normal slowly. i had bleeding which has stopped a few days ago and i have bloating but i am 30 pounds thinner and my clothes are looking nice on me. i can be active for 2 hours a day but ten i am tired again. everyday my energy level gets better. inemia is important to watch out for. best foods are-liver, beef, shrimp, salmon, spinach, brussel sprouts, collard greens, nuts and pork and turkey./mary

Hi,

My name is Sally and I have had severe back pain for about a month and a half now.  I went to the emergency room on the 1rst of September and the doctor misdiagnosed me with back pain and ordered physical therapy.  I have had a back injury in the past and I knew that this was different so I went to my regular doctor and she sent me for tests.  A 6 cm cyst was discovered along with cysts on my liver.  I will learn if there is torsion with the ovarian cyst on Monday, but I'm pretty sure that that is the case.  I don't know what to expect from the surgery (which I want to have at a reputable hospital in Boston).  Please let me know from anyone out there that has experienced anything similar to this.  I would like to figure out what the recovery time is and also what the pain during recovery is like.  I run a freight company and three self storage companies so I don't want to go back to work too soon and hurt myself.

Hi, thanks for writing to me.  I should be getting the path report in a couple of days.  The doctor said that if I don't hear from him, then everything was fine with it.  I will call them either way cuz I don't want to just assume that it turned out ok & have something slip through the cracks.  The doctor felt VERY confident the cyst was benign as it was just a fluid-filled sack & nothing more.  I hope he was right & thanks for your good wishes!  :-)

Welcome back!!

I am glad to hear that you are doing so well.  Take it easy though.  I had surgery three weeks ago and i felt like walking 3 miles 3 days after but realized soon that my body needed to take it easy for a few more days.  So allow your body to rest as much as you can and enjoy your time off.

Welcome to the RS, I'm really pleased it went well and you are feeling ok. Remember to take it easy and not do too much too soon because it takes time for your body to get over what has been done.
