Ovarian cysts and surgery

Hello, I have had pain in my lower right abdomen on and off for about a year but when the pain lasted 4 days I went to ER and had an ultrasound which showed approx 7 cm cysts on both ovaries. They have referred me to a gynaecologist but didn't tell me what type of cysts they are. I am 28 and have been on the pill for 4 years so am worried that the cysts might be more serious. I don't know how long I will have to wait to see the gyno so would really appreciate it if you could give me any information. Could you tell me what kind of cyst it is likely to be at this size and is it likely that these cysts will need to be surgically removed? If so, how likely is it that my ovaries will be removed aswell?

Hello Yvonne,
I have been to the specialist today and they have informed me that they are dermoid cysts.  They are 10cm and 11cm and because of my age and not having any children they want to operate as soon as possible.  Apparently it's quite rare to have them on both at the same time.  They said they will try and save the ovaries but it is unlikely.  They might be able to save some healthy ovarian tissue which could help with hormonal treatment afterwards but I will probably have difficulty having children so they are going to freeze some eggs just in case.  I am now just waiting for the call but they are hoping to see me again next week.
I'm devastated.  I wished for children more than anything else and was trying to set up a good home and life for them before I started trying.  To have this dream all disappear in a matter of weeks is terrifying.
I said before that I didn't have any friends or family close as they are in the UK and I am trying to emigrate to New Zealand.  I am with my boyfriend but I think it's difficult for him to understand a womans medical issues so I really appreciate your help and advice.  Thank you

Thank you for your reply. It's so good to have a forum like this as I don't have friends or family around me to share my concerns with.  Congratulations on your pregnancy!

Hi Japnz

Its really difficult to say what type of cyst you have without knowing more detail.  You can get simple cysts (purely fluid filled) that can grow large and cause pain which can either go on away on their own or sometimes have to be removed as they can cause the ovary to twist which causes the pain.

There are also complex cysts/tumours  (fluid and solid contents) which dont go away on their own, and can grow to different sizes, the growths can form inside or outside the ovary.  For example I have a 10cm complex tumour that they think is a Dermoid inside my ovary,  which contains hair, fat and skin, they are benign (non concerous) and I was due to have this removed last week and found out I was pregnant, so the operation has been cancelled until I am in week 16, as this can cause the ovary to twist or rupture and will cause considerable pain.

I dont think the pill would have caused your cysts, this is highly unlikely, so please dont worry about that.

Unfortunately the waiting is the worst part and you will need to discuss with your Gyno having them removed.  They normally remove them after 5cm for the risk of rupture or twisting of the ovary which sounds like what is happening to you.   At 7cm, I am sure they can remove these by keyhole surgery where its an outpatient procedure and not painful, I didnt think it was anyway.

Good luck, please ask as many questions and let us know how you get on,  there are lots of ladies with great advice on this forum who have been through or going through what is happening to you.

Best Wishes
Yvonne
