Post surgery gas

Hi All,

This is day five of recovery and I still look pregnant, lol.  Seriously, how long before all the gas is gone and my stomach returns to normal.  I am suppose to return to work next week, but I fear fitting clothes may be an issue.

I am actually a coordinator at a maternity home, so my job is not strenuous at all.  I do not currently have any residents, so allows me so flexibility at the moment.  I actually cleaned this morning and I am still feeling good with the exception of fatigue and a headache.  I really don't have to take my pain meds except at night and that is only because it is still hard to sleep in certain positions.  I will probably do a walk today at the track for about ten minutes (old lady style of course) and see how that helps.  I am so happy I found this site before my surgery, it really helps talking to others that have been through the same surgery.

MarieMichele, I don't know how I feel about nine weeks, so I choose to ignore that little tidbit, lol.  Chap0188, I know what you mean about not being able to stand up straight, but I think I am now able to stand upright.

My post-op surgery gas lasted 9 weeks.  Sorry, I am sure nobody wants to hear this, but it can last a LONG TIME.

Do you have a desk job? (I hope so).  If so, I recommend bringing a small pillow you can hold to your abs if you get sore.  Being at work all day after surgery and after being able to take it easy at home.....well, trust me, the first week or two of it is just not much fun at all.

A few suggestions since we are close in suregery dates. I know it hurts but walking some each day helps. The first 2 or 3 days I was like hell no! It was impossible to stand up straight because of the bloating casue i thought my stiches would explode. I tried to walk every four hours for just a couple minutes. Starting day 4 post surgery I was able to sit up and stand up slowly without assistance. So I started walking every 30 to 45 minutes just for a few minutes to help with all the bloating. On day 6 I started to walk to longer periods of times for 5 to 10 minutes a few times a day. When I say walking i mean very slowly around my couch or the courtyard in my apartment complex. Very short and not strenuous. Everyone is different and I feel like I am recovering a little quicker than most people (or have a higher tolerance for pain). I still have pain at the incisions and sharp pains where they removed cysts (left ovary, right falopian tube), endometriosis, and appendix. But yes rest is important but also walking slightly is to (in my opinion and direction from my doctor). Obviously if walking is causing more pain call your doctor and see if you can talk to him or the nurse. I have found my nurse to be great when I have quick questions.

I had really bad bloating because of constipation and the surgery itself. I used Miralax for 4 days in a row to help with the constipation and I also ate high fiber oatmeal and prunes (yuk!). It eventually worked and I found it really help with the bloating! Best of luck to you try to rest but walk as much as possible as long as it doesn't hurt!

I dont know what to say, lol.  Thankfully my job is going to let me work a few days from home next week, because you guys are right it is ridiculous.  I thought it was because of constipation, but now I can see the gas is a problem of its own.  The bloating actually pulls at my stitches at times which makes for a very uncomfortable situation.  I did some walking today and tomorrow I may venture out a little further, not too far, because it does not feel too good to walk outside.   Walking inside is ok, but when I went out the door I felt pressure at the bottom of my stomach.  You ladies are great and I am so happy I found this website.

Same here!  I am still bloated (maybe a tiny baby bump bloated). I am 10 days post surgery and I am wearing long flowy dresses and sweat pants when I am not at work. On day 8 I went back to work wore a long skirt and just hiked it up so it fit my tummy and was comfortable for my incisions (had my appendix removed too so I had a couple insicions up high). The next day at work I thought I could MAYBE fit in a pair of larger pants but was very uncofortable so I went back to the skirt and hiked them up. So if you are still bloated I suggest going the skirt route so you don't have to buy new clothes.

I'm in the same boat with you, hun! 2 weeks and a bit post surgery and I'm still wearing stretchy trousers and clothes a size too big for me, I look about 5 months pregnant and no matter how much I watch what I eat and try to walk gently here and there, the weight is just not shifting in the slightest! It's very annoying, I wasn't slim before the surgery but this is ridiculous! it's nice to know it will go eventually!

No need to fear, the swelling WILL go down lol.  It just takes some time.  You can help get rid of the gas by walking.  That is one of the best ways to get rid of it.  Also, make sure that you drink plenty of fluids.  This will also get your bowels moving.  One thing to keep in mind is, they filled you with a lot of air when you had your surgery, thus the gas.  Also, the swelling is also due to the fact that your body is trying to heal.  You should be back to normal size in about 4 weeks (DON'T KILL THE MESSENGER.  HAHA).  I know it seems like forever, but you will be back to normal before you know it.

I'm almost 5 weeks post-laporoscopy and am still having problems with keeping my pants zippered up while I sit at work.  I don't look 7 months pregnant anymore - just perhaps about 5 months (lol) - but its going down slowly and I try to wear overshirts that can cover my tummy.
