Small persisting ovarian cyst, post menopausal

Hi Everyone, I just had a follow up ultrasound 2 months after my first one for a small 1.7 cm cyst on my left ovary.  I'm 58 years old, post menopausal.  The 2nd ultrasound showed no change and recommended another follow up in 3 months.  I know this cyst is small, but since I'm post menopausal, do I have grounds to request that my ovaries be removed?  I don't really want to go for ultrasounds every 3 months, but I'm thinking my gynecologist will say removal is not warranted since the cyst is small and not changing (yet).  What would you do?  Thank you.

Just for closure on this topic, I met with the surgeon today and he's convinced the cyst is benign based on its size and the fact that it hasn't grown in 2 months.  He said I should have the follow up ultrasound in 3 months and if the cyst is still there and the same size, then have another US at 6 months.  So, that's what I'm doing.  Good luck to everyone.

Thanks Sandy, I did read your profile...you did have more going on.  I have low abdominal pain, which is what caused me to go to the doctor in the first place, but the weird thing is, it's on the other side!  So, I'm not sure it's related.  I do have dull low back pain as well.  I wasn't sure a small cyst could cause pain, but maybe it could.  Thank you again for responding.

Hi Ruth,

Mine was very small.. don't even remember the exact size. I had some pain which I originally thought was Diverticulitis--almost the exact pain that I'd experienced before.. it sometimes radiated to the back (and this was with a small cyst) If I had been younger, I'm sure they would have insisted I monitor it. I had a few other issues as well though; there was fluid in the uterus which shouldn't have been there, and a few small fibroids, all of which bore investigating. So I had a D&C as well.

I was also experiencing some mild nausea too, and just a general feeling of "blah" . If you go to my profile, it goes into a little more detail. Most doctors (mine included) swear there should be no pain with these small cysts however, once it was removed, there was no more pain .. so go figure.

Good luck with your next appointment and please let us know how it goes .

Sandy

Hi Sandy,
Just an update to let you know that my gynecologist agreed with me about removing the ovaries and tubes (although she didn't comment on having one or both removed) and referred me to a surgeon.  I have an appointment with him on Tuesday.  May I ask you...what size was your cyst?  Also, did you have any symptoms?  Thank you.

Hi Sandy, Thank you very much for your response.  Since my primary care doctor ordered the ultrasound, I faxed the results to my gynecologist and did as you recommended, i.e. I asked her about having the cyst, ovaries and tubes removed.  I'm not sure is she'll go for it, or if she'll agree to removing just the one as in your case.  I'll post a follow up here when I get a response.  Thank you again.

Hi,

I can only tell you what I did.. I too am postmenopausal, had a small ovarian cyst a few years ago. I also did not want to continue "monitoring" the thing so they agreed to remove the cyst, along with the ovary and tube. It was done laparoscopically (out patient) and a piece of cake. Felt fine in a few days but was told not to drive or lift anything heavy for 2 weeks. Had the followup app the next week and went to the grocery store the same day.

I would have liked to have everything removed but my Dr. said no way.. She wouldn't even remove the other ovary. Evidently the ovary still fulfills a function. I was concerned that my chances would be increased of getting another cyst. She assured me since my cyst was small, there would be no reason to think I'd get another (especially at my age). She was one of the Drs that don't like removing healthy organs.

Even at our age, cysts are still fairly common and 95% benign.. All you can do is ask that the ovary be removed.. my Dr. had no problem with doing so.. Good luck and let us know,

Sandy
