large ovarian cyst need answers?!

Hi I am fifteen years old and was recently diagnosed with a 8x8cm ovarian cyst on my left ovary.  I have been missing periods frequently, having some intense pains, and a lot of symptoms.  I am scheduled to see my ob gyn tomorrow about this, but i was just wondering what i might expect to hear treatment wise.  Would they most likely tell me i would have to have surgery?

Hi
Normally a cyst over 5cm is removed via keyhole or open surgery (depending on type of cyst)
Because of the pain u are getting it's prob not a good idea to do the "wait and see" approach because cysts can rupture or twist ur fallopian tube or ovary. The pill is one option that they might try to see if it reduces in size.
Everyone gets cysts with each cycle but they don't get big and disappear by themselves normally, but the fact that urs is a reasonable size and causing u pain is good enough reason for the doc to suggest surgery, hope all goes well for u, take care

Most cysts eventually resolve on their own. Surgery is not usually needed. Your doctor may recommend that you take an oral contraceptive and will probably want to monitor the cyst via ultrasound to see if it grows or (hopefully) goes away.
