Pink,

I had a dermoid cyst.  I was suppose to just have the cyst removed, but because of the damage caused by the fluid and blood in the area of my left ovary, the ovary had to be removed.

Hello hun,

I am 29 years old and recently went through the laparoscopy surgery to remove a 10cm cyst and my left ovary.  I originally found out that I had a cyst near my ovary back in March of 2008.  The knowledge of this terrified me because all I could think about was cancer.  My OBGYN completed a vaginal ultrasound to confirm this and decided to keep an eye on it.  I left the office and the returned 3 months later.  At this time I told my doctor that I was noticing hair in places that I had never had hair before.  Come to find out, my body was producing more testosterone than normal. I had started an intense exercise regiment which was increasing the production of testosterone in my body, but I knew something was wrong.  The doctor began to give me a physical and when she pressed in my abdomen near my belly button, I cringed in pain.  She did another ultrasound and noticed there was no change in the cyst.

On December 2, 2008, I was leaving Arkansas and collapsed in the Little Rock, Arkansas airport.  I have no knowledge of the ride to the hospital and when I came around, the E.R. doctor stated that I had 10cm cyst that had ruptured and needed to come out A.S.A.P!  I was absolutely terrified and alone.  I flew back home on 12/3/08 and had surgery seven days later on my birthday.  It was the goal of my doctor to save the ovary, but because there was so much damage done by the fluid and blood leaking from the cyst, the ovary could not be saved.  I do not have any children and have always wanted at least one.

I said all of that to say this, no one knows what tomorrow holds for you, me, or anyone.  Just make sure you place your fears to the side, because you truly don't want to focus on the negatives.  There are many unknowns and nothing will quite fit into the "typical" molds.  I did not have any significant pain until the cyst ruptured.  Most often the cysts do not cause pain so don't fret over that.

I am now 13 days outside of my surgery and am healing slowly.  The meds were my best friends up until a few days ago, but now I tend to not rely on them.  I still can't walk too far too long and going up and down my stairs is not feasible.  I hear it gets better and I have faith that it will.  As for me having children, I firmly believe that whatever God has in store for me will be.  That is what helps me to stay focused and to avoid fearing the unknown.

I wish you all the best.

Like Sandymac said, cysts don't always cause pain, but yours should already be in consideration to surgically remove it. It's quite big already. What did your doctor say? Don't worry; cysts are benign 95% of the time, even less likely to be cancerous, the younger you are. Did the doctor at least discuss with you the type of cyst it is? Don't be afraid to ask him/her a bunch of questions. Good luck.

Hi,
I imagine it's exactly what your Dr. said it was.. an ovarian cyst. They don't always cause excruciating pain I don't think. There is a forum just for Ovarian Cysts. You will no doubt get a lot more responses on that forum since this forum is for Ovarian Cancer. You may also want to check the top right of the page where "Health Pages" are located. There is a lot of information about cysts.

Also, it will be helpful if you would fill in your profile.. It gives us more information in order to help you . For instance your age is important in the way in which cysts are treated..
