weight gain

Hi all. I found this web site last night..after slipping a disc 3weeks ago and having a MRI scan it also revealed a large cyst.. my gyny has confirmed removal of both ovaries and the cyst.. I had a hysterectomy 6 yrs ago and a laparotomy 22yrs ago when i was pregnant.  I,m worried about being plunged into the menopause over night and also wondered whether anyone else has noticed increased weight especially around the midrife..and i also have a pain between my shoulder blades around the bra strap area which really hurts??

Hi Chrissie.  Unfortunately, it is normal to gain weight when you have an ovarian cyst.  I think asking to keep your good ovary is a great idea.  Then you would not have to go into medical menopause.  I have had to do that 2 times (I have a condition called Ovarian Remnant Syndrome, so eventually my ovary cells that were left behind regenerate) and if they put a patch on you before you leave recovery, it is not too bad.  The worst part for me was the hot flashes and mood swings.  Thankfully for me, I didn't have to take the hormones very often because my ovary regenerates itself (or not so good cuz i keep getting cysts).  I think when you go to pre-op appointment, ask your doctor why he wants to remove both ovaries.  Tell him that if the ovary without the cyst looks good that you want to keep it.  No sense taking out a perfectly good organ.  I'm glad you found us.  You will get great advice and support here.  Please keep us posted on how you are doing!

Hi Chrissie, you poor thing pain everywhere, interesting you say about your shoulder pain,i have had terrible shoulder pain for the past twelve mths since my last surgery, mentioned it too my doctor who said that it was not unusual after surgery as you get pulled about abit, but it has continued for twelve mths. I too have a cyst on the right ovary, any connections i dont know, but i have heard this mentioned before.
The weight gain around the middle im afraid comes to us all, i noticed my body changing shape very quickly. Perhaps you should ask about not having both ovaries removed like i have done, to prevent the menopause happening to you. I was also told i was to have both removed but after lots research even though i am post menopause i am going to be asking to keep the good one. Hope your pain gets better and keep us informed with how your doing, we are all here for each other.
