Anyone had a FRACTURED COMPRESSION VERTABRAE?

I just found out that I have a Fractured Vertabra at L3. Unfortunately it is an older fracture and I don't know if it can be operated on. Of course I didn't realize that I had it because I have so many other disc problems and others on my lower back. The PM Dr. kept telling me that I didn't need an MRI done previously, so we didn't find it earlier so that I could get treatment for it in the usual manner. I'm 58 y/o and am going to a NeuroSurgeon this week. THX for any help!

I hope you are feeling better.  I had a compression fracture of my L1 Vertebrae back in 09 from a sledding accident. I had 2 surgeries; 1 to stabalize with metal rods and another to remove the rods a year later. I was very lucky to have such excellent health care at John Muir Hospital in CA. My doctor's advised surgery or risk chronic pain.  I still have pain after I have done too much physical activity at the end of the day. I avoid lifting and try not to carry my kids, now 2. I went through a pregnancy during my recovery from surgery which complicated my recovery. Otherwise I suggest you find a good surgeon, have MRI's and catscans done. My other saving grace is my investment in a terpur-pedic bed. It erases my pain at night allowing me to sleep and wake up painfree! I hardly take pain meds and have a challenge keeping up my liltte miracle.  Hot tubs also help!

Hello and hope you are doing well.

Understand your predicament. It needs to be seen if at present the fractured segment is stable and if it is causing any compressive symptoms. Based on this therapy can be planned. Also, you will need to be investigated on the cause for the fractured vertebrae. It could be due to osteoporosis or due to injury. This will help prevent further fractures. Please discuss these options with your consulting doctor.

In the meantime, Avoid those movements or exercises that aggravate your pain. Try not to lift weights or bend as this can worsen your symptoms. Try applying local analgesic creams. Place ice over the painful area every 1-2 hrs for pain relief. Sleep on a firm surface with a pillow under the knees and take OTC pain medications like Tylenol (acetaminophen) or ibuprofen. Ensure to take them after food.
