Anyone know what may be wrong?

I am a teen and for about a month now I have been suffering really bad leg pains.
It occurs the worst at night and it is really bad in my right knee and shin.
My knee feels like there is something under the kneecap and that if I cut it open that something would come out and it would feel better.
My shin hurts so bad that I continuously kicked it one night because it felt like it would feel better broken!

The pain in my knee and shin worsens every night and I have no idea what the problem is...
Any ideas?

How far down does it go? Mine starts just below the knee cap and is maybe 2 inches long. It is also very hard and if I push on it I can feel a bit more pain. It pretty much looks like a half of a small walnut under my skin.
Let us know what the doctor says. It's always better to get things checked out if you are feeling discomfort. Better to be safe that sorry.

I have felt my knee, and the knee that is in pain is hard under the kneecap where the one that is fine is soft. There is also a knot like some of you have mentioned, and it continues down into my shin.

I will talk to my father about this and hopefully be able to go to the doctor and get it fixed.

I had osgood-schlatter in my right knee. I have had it since I was in 6th grade. I played a lot of sports so I'm sure it was associated with that. I'm sure it is possible though even if you don't play sports. Right below the knee cap I have a knot that is about the size of a walnut. It has always caused some discomfort but I have never really felt anything in the shin area. I was even able to be in the Marine Corps. I actually have more pain in my left knee caused from degenerative joint disease.
I also get shin splints sometimes, even just from walking. They are very uncomfortable and tend to bother me from my knee down.
If you are experiencing pain something is wrong. I would get in to the doctors to have them check it out. They will probably give you a x-ray to check everything out.
In the meantime I would try a icepack on it. If the ice doesn't help, try a heating pad. Our bodies tend to react differently to each so give both a try. Maybe to some advil before bed also. That's what my doctor recommended when I was in grade school for my osgood-schlatter.
I hope you can get to the bottom of it!
Best of luck.

If you goggled this condition you know that according to the information that Osgood-Schlatter disease or syndrome occurs in active boys and girls aged 11-15. At eighteen you may be a bit out of the age category but any thing is possible. It is much more prevalent in males than females with reports of a male-to-female ratio ranging from 3:1 to as high as 7:1.

Sometimes we can injure ourselves without actually knowing we did so. A "normal" twist or turn can cause an injury that goes unnoticed at the time.

I did google my symptoms before and I thought it may be that, but I don't exercise or do any kind of strenuous activities so I wasn't sure if that could still affect me. I am not involved in any sports or anything that would cause me to strain my knee or do anything to it.
It was also a very sudden pain, it just started occuring.
More frequently at night but it is starting to worsen during the day, though still the very worst at night.

Hello and Welcome to the Pain Mangement Community,

Have you seen your PCP? If not I suggest that you have these painful symptoms evaluated. You may have a meniscus tear in your knee or patella fistulas.

There are multiple conditions that could be the source of your pain so I am merely guessing. The pain could simply be from over use. At any rate you should see your physician to begin the diagnosis process.

Best of luck to you.
Take Care,
Tuck

Hi

Do you have a lumps appearing just below your knee caps? Does it get worse after exercise? If so it could be (this could be spelt incorrectly) osgood- schlatter disease. It's common in teenagers, my brother had it and had similar symptoms. It's were the bones in your lower legs grow too fast. If you google it you will find more information. I would suggest you go to a doctor and get yourself checked out, it's probably best.

Take care
