Did anyone see House last night and His Methadone use?

I was just wondering if anyone saw the episode of House and how he started to use methadone for the relief of his pain, I know I don't want to start Methadone but does it really work that well? For me the dangers outweigh the relief because I have a very addictive personality but wouldn't that  be amazing if it was a good as that without being so dangerous? I'm glad the episode showed the dangers and didn't make it seem like the drug solved all his problems.

I just read your post and I SO AGREE with you.
My issue is I started taking meds Tramadol for my bulging disc in my back. People treat you like you are a junkie I do have pain often in my lower back. However over time I did abuse and still abuse the tramdol because it makes you feel happy and it just as a relaxing effect. I see a pain specialist for my back but I also suffer with Bipolar disorder.
Sometimes I just get so overwhelmed and sad. I feel like I am not normal. I am currently taking morphine extended release 15 miligrams 2 twice a day. I have run out of my Clonazepam so I am not feeling like myself a little anxious. I am not sure if its because I am only taking the morphine and no tramadol or if its because i dont have my clonezepam. I am just so tired of all of this.....

I saw were you wrote that you have a pain slecialist that you go to and a signed contract that you follow and do not let any other doctor perscribe you narcotics. You are doing what you are suppost to do, but i also see that you call yourself an addict. There is a big difference in addicition and being dependent. You are like most of us cp patients dependent on pain meds. Stop being so hard on youself, you are not an addict you arent cravcing drugs to get high you are taking the meds for a legit reason. That doesn't make you an addict. You said it yourself that your quality of life would be terrible without the meds so lighten up on yourself.

I just want to aplologize right here and now for my atrocious spelling whenever I post LOL That being said, I look forward to getting to know everyone and I'm feeling very good and confident that this will turn out to be another  useful wepon in my arsenol to combat CP. Hello Babs,

I am glad that you found us on the Pain Management Forum of MedHelp. Welcome. As you can see by your responses we all know the pitfalls of having CP and the difficult decisions we face with pain management.

My experience with methadone is as follows. I took it for about ten days. It was too small of a dose to significantly relieve my pain but large enough that it made me very sleepy. The idea was to let my system adjust to it gradually and than increase the dosage to control the pain. I never reached that point due to the lethargy and decided with my PCP (who is my PMP) to try another "Big Dog" narcotic that my system tolerates better. Bottom line, each one of us must weight the risks with the benefits of the various pain relievers and than determine what best works for us. I'm sure we have all had days were would have eaten do-do if it would stop the pain. At least I certainly have had many of those days.

House is one of my favorite network series. Yes his colleagues have referred to him as an addict but they have all said numerous times that he has true chronic pain. It adds to the drama to refer to him as a addict more often than they refer to a honest chronic pain sufferer. If you have followed the series you have also seen episodes that his colleagues go to bat for him and seen to it that his pain is treated, even by facilitating his quest to  obtain pain medications.

We all are concerned what the future will hold for us in terms of our requirement for narcotics. How will we function if we deteriorate even more? Will there come a time when we reach the max of dosage or that nothing will help our pain? Will the DEA tighten prescription laws to the point that only those with a terminal illness will be allowed narcotic? So many uncertainties lay ahead for CP patients. I try to push those concerns to the back of my brain and take one day at a time.

I am a former ER team memeber and have been a part of those conversations. I can tell you that not all ER team members feel that way and not every patient is looked as as a drug seeker. There are many, if not most  that can see the difference between those that truly have CP and those that just come to ER looking for drugs. I am sad to report that in my experience in ER and Urgent Care, drug seekers out weight the patients that have true CP.  It seems to be a sad fact.

I am very hopeful that you will remain as an active memeber of our Pain Management Community. We all rely on one another and welcome you into our community. I encourage you to respond to the posts and share your experience or just add your support. There is always room for more members, support, information and caring.
Peace, Tuck

Here Here and I second that and so on. I wish I wasn't so neurotic and I could actually ignore people but a lot of my validation as a human comes from how others view me. I know it is wrong and stupid and well basically harmful but it is what it is. I have to admit to myself that I am in fact an addict but I am a functioning addict. I rely on the Pain meds to allow me to function in society. I have a full time job, I have a ten yr old daughter I have a Police Officer Husband. The only way for me not to spend my days in bed crawled up in a ball crying because of the pain and wishing I were dead I have to take narcotics. I don't get "high" from them, I don't Doctor Shop, I have signed a contract with my PM and I only use one pharmacy and don't let any other of my doctors prescribe narcotics. All of my doctors know about the PM and I am very open and honest about the whole thing. So am I an Addict, Yes. Does  drugs control my life. NO Does Pain control my life, Yes Am I handling it.. I think so Yes. Wow that felt good to say out loud THANK YOU , thank you all so much.

Like Turbo I take Methadone - it does help the pain; especially when I took it with Lyrica. I have gone through wd from Meth and it ***** but it can be done. It helps a lot with the pain though so I have resigned myself to taking it the rest of my life. I recently had a Spinal Cord Stimulator implanted and was starting to feel better but it quit working yesterday. I go this afternoon to see why. Back to the subject, though - if you are going to be on pain meds the rest of your life you might as well be on something that works if you can tolerate it. Good luck.
PS - I like what Jollyman069 said about not paying "attention to ignorant people"! I second that statement!!

The sd thing is i beleive probably almost all of us chronic pain sufferers have had the same problem as you all have.. before i found my pain specialist i ahd a doctor come right out and tell me i was a drug addict seeking drugs.. so we have all face the indignity of being called addict or drug seeker i just dont pay any attention to ignorant people

Babs,

I know how you feel about being dependant on these drugs forever.  I am 24 years old and I'm already taking Methadone for my pain in addition to 14 others for problems mostly stemming from the original pain.  While I am very glad to have found something that works so well, I sometimes wonder what my quality of life is going to be like when I am in my 40's and 50's.  How many meds will I have to take every day then?  I am very thankful that I have such a wonderful PM doc here in Idaho, I imagine my quality of life would be much worse without her.  I, too have overheard nurses talking in the hospitals about the guy in room xx 'watching the clock' for his pain meds or something similar, and it really upsets me.  Apparently they don't teach them in school that most oral pain meds work better for controlling pain and not killing it when it's an 8 out of 10!  I guess we are getting a little off the original topic here.  I am really looking forward to seeing season 5 of house.  Actually just watched the season 4 finale last night.  Sorry for the long rant, guess I showed up for work a little too early this morning!

Thank you all so much for taking the time to read and respond to me, it means the world to me, Mollyrae, I'm am opiate tolerant and am on 75 patch every two days. Plus dilauded for break through 4 times a day, somedays I really wish I had more. I'm 39 years old and the thought of being dependant on narcotics for the rest of my life depresses the heck out of me. I have two chronic conditions, Psoriatic Arthritis and HVC and the treatment for each aggrivates the other, rock meet hard place! It was a godsend to finally be sent to a Pain Management Specialist and finally not have to be thought of as a drug seeker. If there was a non narcotic way to aleviate my pain I'd buy stock in the company but since at present, that is not the case I thank god there are drugs available to at least ease some of my pain. There is nothing more degrading then being in the ER and overhearing the nurses talking to eash other about how the patient in curtain 3 is faking and only here for drugs. It makes me what to scream, It is so unprofessional to allow patients to overhear their warped opinions, I have been so embarrased in the past and it made me question if I had just normal pain that most people could handle and I was just really a wuss so that made me depressed and the last thing I need is depression on top of everything else. For the longest time I considered myself a Hypochondriac that just happened to be sick! Then I found a doctor, my rhuematolgist, and i felt so comfortable with him and he actually listened to me , can you beleive it, a doctor spent time with me and didn't dismiss my complaints. Things have gotten better, slowly but as you all know it is an uphill battle. I mean never mind the pain and illness or injury we all have to deal with but then to have to deal with disbeleiving people on top of everything, It is almost more then I could take. I hope today finds you all pain free : )

I am taking a different angle on this...I have watched the show a couple of times..and all his colleuges call hima drug addict...and it is hard enough for us chronic pain sufferers too get the help and meds we need to live a normal life away from severe pain. I thinks it's wrong for a show as popular as House  to have something like that on it.

As far as methadone goes everyone that i have talked too with knowledge on the subject have all said if you start methadone as treatment you will pretty be on it for the rest of your life. If you stop taking it , it is one of the hardest pain meds to w/d from. i get this info from people who have stopped using it and a subtanvce abuse counsler that is a freind of mine

Hey Babs, welcome to the Pain Forum. I have not tried Methadone, I use the Fentanyl Patch and that also works wonders for my severe pain. I do know of a member who has good knowledge of Methadone. Her name is Tuckamore and she is one of thte cl's. She is usually here during the day but had pressing issues at home. She will be here tonight. I will also send her a pm for you. Please be patient.

One good thing about Methadone is it's a natural pain reliever. Are you opiate tolerant? If so, you may want to consider the Fentanyl Patch. If you would like some info on it please feel free to contact me on my home page. Take care......

I tried methodone years ago and I honestly could not stay awake. I just slept all day for three days and went back to my doc and said this is not going to work. Thats when started the medications I take now and they wrok alot better.
Everyone tolerates medications differently so what may work for one will not really work the same for another.

Babs,

I don't have cable so I won't be able to see this episode until the DVD comes out.  However, I have been on Methadone for my pain for a little while now after a fairly long stint with Norco.  I think from what I've heard about the show, the may have dramatized the effects of Methadone a little bit for the good of the show.  It has by far been the best thing I have ever taken for my pain.  I am closer to being totally pain free than I have been in years, thanks to this drug.  I have heard many of the horror stories about it, particularly about how hard it is to come off of it, but since it is working so well for me right now, I could care less how bad that part of it is.  Initially starting out it made me very tired throughout the day, but I could have started at a lower dose and worked my way up and most likely avoided that, just chose not to.  The only real complaint I have about it is that it is very constipating.  Much more so than any other narcotic I have ever taken.  I take MiraLax, Amitiza, and Colace every day, and I eat a large bowl of unprocessed bran, applesauce and prune juice after dinner to help as well.  Other than that, Methadone has just been wonderful for me, although your experience may differ.
