Darvocet Dosage

New Rheumy prescribed Darvocet (I think the Pharmacy gave Generic - does it matter?)  But the bottle says take, 1-2 every 6 hours, and the strength is 1-650. So is my math right in that if I take 2 pills every 6 hours, 5200mg of Tylenol?   He also prescribed me Lyrica 150mg but I am not getting any relief with that...

I've had Vicodin 5-500 before, but prescribed by my Primary Care..seemed to work well other than having to take it so often + it also contained Tylenol. I am a bit frightened by the Darvocet, not to mention it is not as strong as Vicodin?

I am only 25..I am not trying to kill my liver and kidneys. At the same time I am in extreme pain due to a continuing battle with Ulcerative Colitis and a new diagnosis of Fibromyalgia. Seems once you've come down with one Auto-Immune disorder you're prone to getting others..

I don't think Darvon is proper treatment for someone who needed Vicoden.  Make sure you let the doctor know that you're not comfortable with so much acetaminophen!

if you ask me darvacet is from the stone ages and i have read it's comparable to motrin on effectiveness. If you were taking vicodin-getting good relief why the change.
Also I just copied this for you
A panel of outside advisors to the FDA have recommended that the agency withdraw approval for the painkiller Darvon, which is also sold as Darvocet with the addition of acetaminophen. The panel found that the minimal pain relief benefits provided by the drugs do not outweigh the substantial risk of overdose, suicide and other known side effects of Darvon.
Copy this link at the bottom into google and you will read the article. Print it out for your doctor. I knew I had read it somewhere. I have battled sever phantom pain for 13 years, had 68 operations, 23 broken bones so I have learned alot over the years. Let me know what you are gonna do about maybe asking your doctor to prescribe a real pain pill

3900mg still seems like a lot + I've recently read up on the FDA Darvocet Warnings that came out this year (2009) with regards to overdoses and ineffectiveness...

Thank you Josh

Rocky,

Here is how this breaks down,

When a doctor prescribes 1-2 ever 6 hours that equates into taking it 3x daily.  If you take the upper dose of 2 pills 3x a day that only equals 3,900 which is in the "SAFE" zone of acetaminophen a day.

Lets say you wake up at 8 am, you take your first dose.  Next does is at 2 pm and last dose would be at 8 pm.   That's 3,900.

Now if you were to take it every 4 hours  (qid) then you would be pushing 5,200

So you wake up at 8 am  take a dose, then 12, then 4, then 8.

Make Sense?

PROPOXY-N/APAP 100-650 is precisely what the bottle says. 1-2 every 6 hours. Yes, my Rheumy phoned it in to the Pharmacy as well as I called his office because of not getting relief from Lyrica. Pharmacist/Pharmacy said nothing to me.

Sounds like a pretty un-smooth move on my Rheumy's part...Yikes

It sounds like the dosage on the Tylenol is 1300mgs per every 6 hrs. which makes it 2600 per day. Yes, that is too much in my mind. To take this chronically would be risking your liver. Have a chat with your Doctor about decreasing the amount of Tylenol your getting.

Please take care,
Mollyrae

yeah that is too much aceto to take daily. Im surprised your pharmacist didnt notice this and say something to you. That happened to me before years ago. After i had my youngest son, the dr phoned in some meds once i was home from the hospital and he had the dosage wrong too. The pharmacist had a sticky note on the bag and bottle and told me not to take as much as the lable said to because it could damage the liver. Just be careful and dont take as much as the bottle says to. Youre supposed to keep your aceto intake below 4,000 mg at the max for a 24 hr period.
