If Karen were available, I'm sure she'd thank you for your answer and your prayers.  She's in the hospital right now to have additional testing and because she has a problem with some internal blood (not internal bleeding) that they can't find the source of.  Sherry (namnam46), has been keeping us updated on the "Karen is in the hospital" thread.
I know Karen would appreciate your response, so, Thank you!

I didn't know that other people got excited about going to see a GI doc, but the prospect of getting answers can cause you to get excited. I'm sorry that you didn't get the answers you were hoping to get. I know that I was excited just over a year ago when I finally got an name for my GI issue and we figured out how to control it. Hope you get answers soon. I'll keep you in my prayers.

Karen I totally agree with what Sara said .Also you totally have the right attitude .You are resilient and I have no worries about you making it through this .You are a very strong person and you will get through this You know that saying that what doesn't kill you makes you stronger .This will just strengthen you .I don't understand why we have to go through these things there must be a reason but I am clueless to what it is .Maybe it's a test .I know you will do fine .I am praying for you and sending good vibes your way .

It doesn't rain but it pours.  I cannot believe they're finding more problems.  I do hope they are doing this via laprascope.  Whatever they find, I desperately hope that it's something easily controlled.  .

Please know you have my best hopes and prayers.  I hope your boss is being understanding during this time.   You deserve a break!

Thanks for the thoughts and prayers about my sister, I am very glad she's doing better, too.  Now to find out what's happening to me.  But you know me, Bree, I'm resiliant and I will bounce back and figure out what's going on me, for sure.   I hope your getting a lot of rest too!

Hi Karen,

I'm VERY glad that you came on home.  I hope that you won't try to work until you get to feeling better!!  PLEASE take care of yourself.

That's REALLY good news about your Sister.  Hopefully, that will be a LITTLE of the stress lifted off of your shoulders.  Do they have any idea how much longer she will be staying in the Hospital?

You BOTH are in my Thoughts and Prayers.  Sending you my Love.....Mama Sherry

Jaybay,

Thanks for the information. I know he ran the hepatitis panel of stuff and that all came back clear, thank goodness.  So, we will just have to wait and see what's going on with everything.  Robyn, I'm glad you told me about the AIC because I didn't really know what that was, so now I know. I went to work today, and started feeling sick so I came home.  It's been one of these weeks where I just dont feel very well.  I just wanted to say thank you to everyone.  I saw my sister last night and she is doing a lot better, much better than I am right now, so thank you for your support.

I'm sending you a PM in response to your questions. Don't panic. The fact that your surgeon is waiting until the latter part of September should signify that this is not an emergency situation. Trust that if it were life threatening you would have been hospitalized immediately.

So we need to think positive and just get to the bottom of what may be happening. The entire picture need to be considered before anyone can jump to conclusions. I am sure that is the reason he is ordering additional diagnostic testing. When all the pieces of the puzzel areavailable he can put it together and come up with a dfinative diagnosis.  .

I hope you are feeling better today. I'll look forward to your updates. :)

You're in my thoughts and prayers.

I'm very sorry to hear that your appointment didn't go well and also that you are facing another surgery.  I know it's got to be very scary, but I'm hoping that with this surgery they will finally be able to find what is causing your pain and begin to treat you appropriately.

I'm afraid I don't know a whole lot about the liver enzyme levels, other than mine have been elevated in the past also - usually when I'm sick with something else - and they, so far, have always gone back to normal.  At one point, my levels were actually even higher than yours, which was a very scary situation.

I actually had an A1C test done not too long ago as my blood sugar on a routine blood test was elevated.  The A1C gives the doctors a better look at how your blood sugar has been over a more extended period of time than a regular blood glucose test will.  The blood glucose test basically gives them just what your reading is at that time, but the A1C will tell them what your levels have been doing over a period of time (I'm not sure of the exact amount of time, but I know that it's not an "instant read" level like the blood glucose test is).  Fortunately, my A1C came out at the high end of normal, so the doctors were less concerned than they had been when they had received the results of my blood glucose test.  So for now, we just have to keep an eye on it to make sure it stays within the normal range.  My brother in law has Type II diabetes and he gets an A1C test done periodically (in addition to doing his normal testing at home) to get a read on how his levels are doing.

I hope that all made sense.

Sending healing thoughts and prayers and best wishes that they find out the cause of your pain and other symptoms quickly.

Robyn
P.S.  Did you get a chance to talk to your sister?  Is everything ok on that score?

Here's a good "readable" article I found on AST and ALT.  Try not to freak out since by themselves, they don't mean much.  That's why your doctor wants more testing.  There are several pages to this article, but I've only posted a couple of them.  Go to the link below for the full article.
********************************

http://www.medicinenet.com/liver_blood_tests/page2.htm

What do elevated liver tests (AST and ALT) mean?

AST (SGOT) and ALT (SGPT) are sensitive indicators of liver damage or injury from different types of disease. But it must be emphasized that higher-than-normal levels of these liver enzymes should not be automatically equated with liver disease. They may mean liver problems or they may not. For example, elevations of these enzymes can occur with muscle damage. The interpretation of elevated AST and ALT levels depends upon the entire clinical evaluation of an individual, and so it is best done by physicians experienced in evaluating liver disease and muscle disease.

Moreover, the precise levels of these enzymes do not correlate well with the extent of liver damage or the prognosis (outlook). Thus, the exact levels of AST (SGOT) and ALT (SGPT) cannot be used to determine the degree of liver disease or predict the future. For example, individuals with acute viral hepatitis A may develop very high AST and ALT levels (sometimes in the thousands of units/liter range). But most people with acute viral hepatitis A recover fully without residual liver disease. To the contrary, people with chronic hepatitis C infection typically have only a little elevation in their AST and ALT levels. Some of these individuals may have quietly developed chronic liver disease such as chronic hepatitis and cirrhosis (advanced scarring of the liver).

It is, therefore, worth mentioning that these liver enzymes do not give an indication of the function of the liver. Sometimes they are mistakenly referred to as “liver function tests” or LFTs, but it is a misnomer commonly used even by most physicians.

What liver diseases cause abnormal aminotransferase levels?

Abnormal liver tests may be detected in the blood in a variety of liver conditions.

The highest levels of AST and ALT are found with disorders that cause the death of numerous liver cells (extensive hepatic necrosis). This occurs in such conditions as:

acute viral hepatitis A or B,

profound liver damage inflicted by toxins as from an overdose of acetaminophen (brand-name Tylenol), and

prolonged collapse of the circulatory system (shock) when the liver is deprived of fresh blood bringing oxygen and nutrients.
AST and ALT serum levels in these situations can range anywhere from ten times the upper limits of normal to thousands of units/liter.

Mild to moderate elevations of the liver enzymes are commonplace. They are often unexpectedly encountered on routine blood screening tests in otherwise healthy individuals. The AST and ALT levels in such cases are usually between twice the upper limits of normal and several hundred units/liter.

One of the most common cause of mild to moderate elevations of these liver tests is a condition called fatty liver. In the United States, the most frequent cause of fatty liver is alcohol abuse. Other causes of fatty liver include diabetes mellitus and obesity. Chronic hepatitis C is also becoming an important cause of mild to moderate liver enzyme elevations.

What medications cause abnormal aminotransferase levels?

A host of medications can cause abnormal liver enzymes levels.

Examples include:

Pain relief medications such as:

aspirin,

acetaminophen (Tylenol),

ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin),

naproxen (Naprosyn, Naprelan, Anaprox, Aleve),

diclofenac (Voltaren, Cataflam, Voltaren-XR), and

phenylbutazone (Butazolidine)
Anti-seizure medications such as:

phenytoin (Dilantin),

valproic acid (Depakote, Depakote ER, Depakene, Depacon),

carbamazepine (Tegretol, Tegretol XR, Equertro), and

phenobarbital
Antibiotics such as:

tetracyclines, [for example, tetracycline (Achromycin)]

sulfonamides,

isoniazid (INH) (Nydrazid, Laniazid)

sulfamethoxazole (Gantanol),

trimethoprim (Trimpex; Proloprim, Primsol)

nitrofurantoin (Macrodantin; Furadantin; Macrobid),

fluconazole (Diflucan ) and some other anti-fungals, etc.
Cholesterol lowering drugs such as:

the statins:

lovastatin (Mevacor, Altocor),

pravastatin (Pravachol),

atorvastatin (Lipitor),

fluvastatin (Lescol),

rosuvastatin (Crestor),

simvastatin (Zocor), and

niacin
Cardiovascular drugs such as:

amiodarone (Cordarone),

hydralazine (Apresoline)

quinidine (Quinaglute, Quinidex), etc.
Other drugs

Antidepressant drugs of the tricyclic type
With drug-induced liver enzyme abnormalities, the enzymes usually normalize weeks to months after stopping the medications.

Tuck,

I haven't noticed anything about my stools, but he was very concerned that my stomach seems to feel a lot better when I curl up, and that was actually one of the things that he seemed to pick out. I still seem to be nauseated a lot.  I do have the surgery date it's September 22nd, but they are also wanting to do further blood work testing, whatever an AIC and do a MRI and a CT scan.  Some of the tests that they are running, I'm not sure why, but he said he thinks I have chronic pancreatitis maybe from having it years ago ( I had it when I had my gallbladder out) and he thinks it may come and go, but also wants to put me through some other stuff.  Basically yesterday he said I just look sick, I'm not sure what that means, but I guess that means something to a doctor.

Tuck and everyone, I wanted to give you one medical test that freaked me out when I saw it, I was telling you about my liver enzymes:  this is why they hospitalized me:
SGPT/AST  is supposed to be between 10-45 units mine was 730 (h) and then my other test SGPT/ALT is supposed to be between 26-65 units  330 (h) if anyone understands what that means, let me know.  By the way I was re-reading my comment and said that my blood work came back ok, that was incorrect, almost all of my bloodwork came back bad.  I'm sorry about the mistake but through my tears it appeared I typed wrong.  Thank you everyone for all your help!

I am so very sorry that yet another problem has come up for you. I have tears and there are no words to express how terribly saddened I am that your news was so frightening. There are no reasons why bad things happen to good ppl. My heart goes out to you.

I am not a religious fanatic but prayer, and lots of it helps during times like this. That's exactly what I am going to do. Turn to your God and He will support and comfort you.

Ask many questions when you see you surgeon again. Write them down as they some to you so you will not forget them. The more you understand the more at ease you will be. Ask what is the best and the worst prognosis and out come. Truly know what you are facing and it may not be so frightening. The fear of the unknown is usually more difficult that knowing exactly what this may mean.

Do you have greasy or oily foul smelling stools? It called steatorrhea. What level is your abd pain? Are you still experiencing nausea or vomiting? Does your pain abdominal pain lessen if you curl up in a ball or bend forward? Those are some symptoms of pancreatitis.

Blood sugars (BS) can elevate when your body is under stress. Insulin is a hormone released by the pancreas. Hyperglycemia or elevated BS is found in diabetes mellitus, liver disorders, hyperactivity of thyroid, pituitary and adrenal glands.

Following my MVA when I suffered massive amounts of internal injuries and during recovery my BS skyrocketed and I required insulin. As I healed the BS returned to normal and has remained that way. I have seen it occur in other patients also. Evaluating all your lab work and fitting the pieces together to determine the most likely diagnosis will require your physician's education, training and experience. Our body works together in unison to maintain a healthy balance. One problem can and does affect a variety of organ functions. I assume your physician is trying to determine that ONE problem that is revealing itself in your abnormal lab finding. Trusting in him and your God right now is very important.

Did you give the date of your surgery....Did I miss the it?  When is your surgery scheduled?

Again we are here for you. Chat when ever you need to do so. Please keep us posted and let us know how you are doing. We are here for you. You are one of our MH family and we will support you the very best we can to help you through whenever lies ahead.

You'll be in my thought and prayers.
I'm sending you Huge Gently ((HUGS)),

Honey,

I can't even think of ANYTHING to say after the report that you have gotten today!!! I'm VERY glad that you have such a THOROUGH Doctor!!  I'm VERY sorry but I haven't seen this post until now today as I've been gone MOST of the day today!

Karen,  are you sure that you don't want to go back in where they can control your Horrendous pain that you are having?  That CERTAINLY explains why the new pain meds haven't been able to give you ANY relief!!  Does he have any suggestions for controlling your pain at the present time while you are at home?

PLEASE tell me that you AREN'T going to go back in to the office to work while your pain is still so strong.

Sweetie, you are a VERY strong person and you have endured SOOOO very much this past year.  I can't think of anyone else that could have done ANY better than you have with all that you have had to deal with.    You know that you have a VERY strong Support group right here!!  Everyone will be here for you while your GI Doctor gets ALL of this straightened out for you so you can get back to NORMAL!!!  I hope and pray that he will find WHAT is going on and get it TAKEN CARE OF one way or another (meaning either through surgery OR medication) whatever it takes!!

I'm here WHENEVER you need me.  As is EVERYONE else is also.

Again I'm VERY sad that I didn't see your post earlier today!! :(

I love you and I'm thinking of you.  As always you are in my Prayers......Mama Sherry

Karen! I can't believe this! I'm sure all of us will be thinking and praying for you.  When is the next thing scheduled for? Did you make it in to see your sister?
In a way, hopefully an exploratory surgery will give them all the info they need, and everything can be taken care of instead of all of these extra surgeries happening.  I know you must feel just awful, and I want to remind you that you are such a strong caring person, and you have been through so much, and you've gotten through it because you are STRONG.  You've been dealt bad cards before, and now you will deal with this, and I know you can do it.  And we will all be here along the way no matter what!
Please msg me whenever---especially if you are up in the middle of the night, send me either a PM or FB msg so I see it right away just in case I'm not on the site...I'm not saying that I'll always be up, but 75% of the time, I am.  I hope you've been able to dry your tears for a bit...we can do this! We'll do it together:)

Melissa,

I'm just so sorry to hear about your friend, too.  Is there anything that I can do for you?  Flower, thanks for the nice words and prayers.  I just have to get over this.  I'm looking at ten sheets of paper that has all my blood work up, and it's freaking me out becuase almost none of the results are bad.  I'm not sure why the GI doctor gave these to me, but now I'll never be able to sleep with how bad that they look.  NO wonder he wanted to put me in the hospital again, and no wonder I was there for eight days.  It makes a lot of sense now.  Anyway, I don't know what to do, except have the surgery for them to make sure I don't have any other internal damage, and then have some A1C test done, I have no idea what that is, and I need to get to my endocrinologist because my thyroid test is way bad, and then my anemia level is pretty low too.  I just got to hang on here, somehow...  It's really hard, especially since I've been crying for an hour or so.

Yeah, it's exploratory, the GI doctor is very concerned over the blood work and that I am still having so much pain in the abdomen area.  He wants to check my liver, spleen, pancreas, kidneys, and other organs I guess.  I just can't believe this is happening, and I'm just so upset right now and shocked.

Oh no!  I hope they are able to figure out what's going on.  It sounds like you have a good G.I. doc.  Can I ask what kind of surgery you are setting up?  Is it exploratory?  I know you have been going through a lot and this just doesn't help.
I hope you can get some good rest and relaxation this evening and hopefully things will calm down soon.  You're in my thoughts and prayers, as is your family.

Everyone,

Thank you for the good wishes at the GI appointment.  Unfortunately things did not go very well.  It seems I may now have some sort of blood sugar problem as my blood sugar the last time they took it (without food or water) was 168. My thyroid level was 9.8 and my GI doctor has set me up for some further exploratory surgeries because he thinks I may have some sort of chronic pancreatitis, maybe a problem with my spleen, or liver.  We are not sure at this time, but I did schedule the surgery time today, and then I had to schedule a time for some additional blood work too.  We bargained about keeping me out of the hospital, because he felt that I could go back into the hospital for care, but I just don't think I can handle much more at this point.  So, I don't mean to upset any of you, but I"m going to keep this short, because I'm crying and can't see the computer screen very well.  IT just doesn't seem like I'm doing very well at the moment.  But thank you everyone, especially Tuck for  reading.
