I need of answers on detoxing from taking Vicodin 10mg 2-3 daily for 2 months?

Hi I was prescribed Vicodin 10mg after a car accident 2 months ago. I have been taking 2-3 daily for two months, and I no longer need the medication. I have heard that you can have a seizure from the withdrawls. I am a full-time college student and school starts tuesday morning & I am scared to death! I'm on day 1 with no meds and I feel like I have the flu & my whole body aches. My heart is a little fast. How long will this go on for? If I only took 2-3 pills a day for just 2 months, I wouldn't be at risk for a seizure right??? I'm told that's just for people whom take many more a day than I did. Please help! I need accurate information, so that I can make it thru this process.

Thank you.

Thank you for the advice. I have bought some relaxing herbs (melatonin) and vitamins. No, I do not have any more left. I feel like I have a cold & the melatonin is helping me relax to not really think about it thus far. I guess I'll see what tomorrow holds. I just feel very flu-like. I think my body is different than some, I felt very dependent on them even though it was just 2-3 a day for 2 mths. Thank you for all the responses. It really helped!

Hi alyce7,

Yep, you have lots of good answers there, and i am not at all a doctor, so can only add in from personal experience. Yes, it is possible for you to become dependent on the hydrocodone at that does and duration... that is why so many people are surprised to find themselves dependent; it does not take much for some people - and everyone is different. Keep in mind that while the physical part of coming off the Vicodin SHOULD be fairly mild, the psychological part may not be. People are often very afraid of withdrawal, and that only makes tings worse. Try to relax and tell yourself that this is temporary, not deadly, and will be over with soon.

Also try to have things around that comfort you: fresh fruit (or chocolate cake), the right music, etc.... and unplug the phone or limit stressful interactions. Stress could definitely have some people wanting to take a pain pill. Take a long soak, whatever you like to do the most.

Last - try to be kind to your body; it's been through lots already. I recommend tapering down, like others here have said. No need to shock your system. Hopefully, you are not all the way out - that tends to add stress - and if you are then you might consider calling your doctor to get some more for a taper down program. When you are feeling a little better - say in a few days - think about getting a massage, going for a walk - moving the bod!

Best wishes,

CJ

Hello Alyce,

Welcome to the Pain Management Forum. I see you have received some good suggestions. I agree that you should be okay. You have not been on a high dose and two months is not a super long time. A gradual decrease should be the best way to wean off the med.

However you should always consult your prescribing physician. Your local pharmacist is also a very good source for information.

Best of Luck to You,
~Tuck

That's not a terribly high dose.  Just gradually cut down.  Imams don't think you'd have much of a risk of seizures from that dose...if you are being completely truthful, as I'm sure you are,

I've been on 2 a day, most days, for nearly year.  I can easily skip a day or two or three, if I find I am not in much pain, and have not had any withdrawal symptoms from skipping.

But, I'm not you.  Just cut back gradually if you can do so.

Hi Alyce,

Sounds like your body has become dependent on the meds. (from the flu like symptoms you are having when not taking them) When I had my first fusion, I took pain meds for two months. To come off of them, we weaned off...by taking less and less every few days until I was off of them. Do you have enough medication to do this? I would also suggest calling your doctor for advice.

I wouldn't think that you would be at risk for seizures though. You weren't at that high of a dose, and that is highly unlikely from Vicodin. *I am not a doctor...just have a lot of experience with pain meds both personally and with my job.

Good luck and keep us posted.

I am thinking that you would be (depending on how your body is) safer from seizures (no prior seizure history) than those who take more than that, however, I honestly don't know. The good news, is you are in a place where you will get all kinds of information and support if you need it. It is Sunday, and the playoffs are on, so it might take just a little more time for more answers, but there will be more answers.
