Hi Tresa47,
In tractable pain simples means pain that is severe and not relieved or managed by any other means or method. If you look up the word in intractable you will find:

1.Difficult to manage or govern; stubborn. See synonyms at unruly.
2.Difficult to mold or manipulate: intractable materials.
3. Difficult to alleviate, remedy, or cure: intractable pain.

intractability in·trac'ta·bil'i·ty or in·trac'ta·ble·ness n.
intractably in·trac'ta·bly adv.

I hope this answers you question. I also hope you are feeling better. Take Care, Tuck
