Hello and Welcome to MedHelp's Pain Management Forum. I am glad that you found us and took the time to post.
You've asked a good question. Please understand that there are no physicians or "experts" on this site. Your best advice will come from a surgical consult and a second opinion.
I had a complete ACL tear in 1990. When this occurred I was told that because I was not in my teens or a professional athlete a repair was not advised. I had a scope done and they cleaned up with torn edges of the ACL. It reduced my pain level. I then had weeks of PT to build supporting structures. It took about two years before the knee would not give out on me and about 12 months before the pain was basically gone.
It is my understanding that today they do reconstructive surgeries on most ppl with torn ACLs. I believe much will depend on your surgeon, your age, general activity level and the severity of the tear.
I wish you a quick and speedy recovery. I know how very painful a torn ACL can be. I was on crutches for almost three months. Please let us know how you are doing. I will be interested to hear about your progress and outcome.
