Knee swollen, red, feel lightheaded

I am 26 years old. I started going back to college in August. I am at school Monday through Friday. I  also work 40+ hours a week, and volunteer every other weekend. Since starting classes again I have been having a lot of trouble with my knee. There is heat coming from it. It gets swollen, and red by the end of the day. At first it didn't hurt at all, it was just swollen. However; the last few weeks it has started to hurt, and I've  gotten lightheaded a few times. Also there is this popping sound that happens if I rest it for awhile, then try to get up. My knee also itches to every now and then.  I put ice on it every time I get a chance, and I switch it up with heat pad, but even when I get a chance to rest for a day it does not feel any better.  Any ideas?

I went to the doctor last week. He said it might be the meniscus. They would have to do an MRI to be sure. He said take ibuprofen, and put ice on it. Which I have been doing. He also said if it hurts in the next week call them and they will schedule an MRI. I haven't called them yet; however; my other knee is now swollen, so I guess I should call them....

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hi there,
A complete clinical examination is essential for correct diagnosis. There can fluid within the knee joint itself, or in the surrounding soft tissue. Acute injuries, anterior cruciate ligament tear, meniscal tears, ligament sprains all can lead to fluid or blood accumulation around the knee joint. If there is no history of trauma any infection in the knee joint can lead to swelling. Rheumatoid arthritis, gout are few other conditions which can lead to pain and swelling around the knee joint. A common cause of knee pain together with joint popping may be seen in patellofemoral pain syndrome, or runner's knee. It is a kind of overuse injury in which the cartilage on the back of the knee cap becomes roughened and clicks as it glides over the bone underneath. Do seek the opinion of an orthopededician for correct diagnosis and treatment. Do keep me posted.
Best of luck and regards!
