Last Update before Surgery!

Hi Everyone,

OK - I had my LAST two appointments today.  The First was with the My Doctor's OR Nurse. She's VERY nice and REALLY made me feel like I was the MOST important patient that My Doctor has!  We covered EVERYTHING and she had me undergo ONE last Blood Draw for typing purposes and then we sat and discussed my paperwork.  I will arrive at 8:30 am and then IF the Doctor is running ahead of schedule they will take me EARLY!!  Otherwise, my surgery is scheduled for 11:30 am on Wednesday, September 8th.

From there I went to my Surgeons' office across town and met with the Doctor that will be "closing" me up.  He is SUPER!!  He DEFINITELY made me feel TOTALLY at ease as her sauntered into the room - VERY casually dressed - and held out his hand and said "Hi, Sherry, my name is Chris"!!  NOT Dr. something or other BUT "Chris"!!  He then proceeded to go over EVERYTHING that was going to happen AND let me ask ALL of MY questions.  He is more thatn willing to use "sutures" INSTEAD of Staples.  (When the rest of you that will be having hip replacements REMEMBER this - STAPLES caus a LOT of pain in themselves!! There is NO WAY that you skin can move WITHOUT hurting with them.  IF you have "sutures" instead it cuts down on about 40% of the pain of "pinching and pulling".  HUGE DIFFERENCE!!!  I had the staples on my first surgery and it was TERRIBLE.  I had the sutures on the second and WHAT a difference they made.  I could sleep SOOO much more comfortably each night!!  That's MY opinion anyway.  :)

They will no only be giving me an anesthetic but ALSO an epidural (same as they use in childbirth) as they have found that it saves the patients a LOT of pain AFTER surgery for the first few hours.  My leg will be "numb" for the first 2 or 3 hours afterwards which will allow me a "few" more hours of NO PAIN!!! I'm ALL for that!!!

As you all know I have the 50 mcg Fentanyl Patch as well as the 12 mcg Patch.  Tomorrow, when I change my patches, I will be LEAVING OFF my 12 mcg patch and quit taking my BT meds until AFTER my surgery.  I asked him if it would benefit me to do this and her REALLY liked the idea.  I didn't HAVE to do this - I suggested it myself.  He told me that he has ALWAYS told his patients that the MORE pain they are in WHEN they go INTO surgery the LESS pain they will have when they come OUT of surgery IF they are on LARGE amounts of Narcotic medications.  I thought it would benefit me to do this and so we are. (I'll let you all know whether it was a GOOD or a BAD choice AFTER my Surgery. )  :)  I told him of my History of Hemorrhaging and he made the notations that needed to be made.  I DIDN'T write down the choice that was made for the anesthetic (sorry) but he was VERY limited because of the fact that Morphine makes me throw-up and he wasn't willing to take the chance with the Dilauded since I COULDN'T remember what it was that caused me to be sick after my LAST surgery PLUS they NO LONGER use Demerol (he said it's rather outdated).  Sure made me feel ANCIENT!!!  LOL
After the surgery, I will have my patches (not sure if it's just the 50 OR both, it doesn't matter as I trust them COMPLETELY to keep me OUT of pain) AND the Fentanyl pump!!

The one thing I DIDN'T have to do that EVERYONE else will be REQUIRED to do is to take the CLASS about the hip implant.  I DIDN'T have to do that as I've done it SOOO many times that I could GIVE it in my SLEEP!!! I, ALSO,  already have ALL of the equipment that I need for AFTER my surgery.  So I was VERY happy that I DIDN'T have to go to it again.

I want toTthank ALL of you that have been so supportive of me while I was TRYING to get ALL of the SURGICAL CLEARANCES for the surgery.  It took me MUCH longer than usual BUT it could have been MUCH worse than it was!!!  :)

PLEASE keep the Thoughts and PRAYERS coming as I will NEED them com e Wednesday!!!  :)  Everything for my updates after my surgery is all set-up and I will be back as QUICKLY as I can be.  I will miss you all while I'm off and I will be CONCERNED about ALL of you while I'm gone and don't have access to my computer so that I can at least READ how you are doing!!! PLEASE try to stay as pain free as possible!!!

I love you ALL and I'm sending you ((((HUGS!!))))........Mama Sherry

I just wanted to take one more opportunity to Thank ALL of you for your WONDERFUL posts AND your PM's that you have ALL sent to me letting me know that your thoughts and Prayers are with me. All of your Well-Wishes are GREATLY appreciated.

ALL of this means so much to me!!  I'm doing REALLY well considering that I removed the 12 Fentanyl Patch last Friday AND haven't had ANY BT meds since LAST Friday morning!! Also, NO Celebrex as well, of course, as no Plavix or Aspirin since last Wednesday.  The ONLY thing that I have noticed is that my ARTHRITIS in my hands has returned Full-Force ESPECIALLY in my thumbs!!  This is ONE reason that I haven't been posting much the past few days.  When your thumbs hurt (Mellie4 - YOU know what I'm talking about) it makes it VERY difficult to type!

I will be thinking of you all while I'm in the hospital and will get back on the computer as soon as I can!!  I HOPE and PRAY that ALL of you will follow Doctor's orders and that your pain will be GREATLY reduced while I'm in the Hospital!!!

I'm sending ALL of you the Love and ((((HUGS!!)))) that you have been sending to me.

I LOVE YOU ALL.........Mama Sherry

PS Just so that you will have a schedule (sort of) IF I go in on time and NOT EARLY - then I will have my surgery at 11:30am Pacific Time.  The surgery time is approximately 45 to 55 minutes IF they can keep the STEM that's in the leg. OTHERWISE it would be approximately 2 to 2 1/2 hours.  The TOTAL time in the Operating Room will be EITHER 1 1/2 hours APPROX. IF they keep the stem OR 3 1/2 hours IF they have to replace it.  They feel that they CAN KEEP the stem.  So we are hoping that you will have SOME sort of news about 3 PM Central Standard Time.  :)   Thank you all for Caring!!!!  :)

Only less than 24 hours until you get in for surgery!  I am excited for you and a little anxious.  I will be hoping everything goes well and praying for you, especially tomorrow!  Hopefully you are getting lots of rest and pampering yourself today.  I hope you will continue to do that in the coming days as well.  I'm sure you'll get the rest, but make sure you get some pampering.
I just can't wait to hear how it all goes!   We all love you and will be there with you in spirit and here waiting for you when you are ready to come back.
Rest well!

Rest as much as you can today!!

You'll want to save your energy for recovery. Tomorrow will be tiring and soon the rehab will begin....so enjoy some quite time while you can. Treat yourself today. Have a favorite dessert, take a long leisurely shower and do the things you enjoy.

You'll be in all of our thoughts and prayers.

I'll chat with you soon!! Sending you cyber hugs and tons of well wishes.

My Best,
~Tuck

Once again, I'm overwhelmed with the caring and kind words that have been shown to me by EACH and EVERY one of you.  :)

Flower - Please NEVER feel bad ly because you might have missed one of my posts.  Heaven knows - I've CERTAINLY missed MY share of people's posts - :).  I KNOW that you are always concerned about ALL of us here on MH.  I'm so Happy that PT has helped you so much in working through some of your pain.  It MOST definitely has it's benefits!! Thank you for your Well Wishes they mean SO much to me!!

Trouble - How kind of you to take the time when you are SO ill to send your Good Wishes MY way!  You are ALWAYS thinking of Others.  We are so VERY lucky to have you here on MH. I HOPE that you are feeling better and get through this as QUICKLY as possible!!  Yes, Trouble - I have made arrangements with Tuck for MY Daughter to PM her and she will pass the word along to ALL of you as soon as she gets some news about how everything has gone. :)  So stay tuned IF you are interested and IF not (which is FINE) PLEASE don't feel OBLIGATED to post because I UNDERSTAND if you are too busy!!  I would NEVER be upset IF you should miss posting.  :)

Bree - You are VERY welcome, and Yes that's true you AREN'T the ONLY one who's had a lot to deal with BUT you have certainly had some of the MOST challenging and life threatening problems lately.  We're ALL so glad that you were fortunate enough to get them worked out!!!  Good Job!!!

Melissa - I PROMISE you that I will do my VERY best to do MY part in making this surgery a COMPLETE 110% PER CENT  success (IF I have ANYTHING at all to do with it)!!!  :)

RunningMom - That's SO kind of you to keep me in your thoughts and Prayers!! I APPRECIATE it VERY much!!!  Believe me I feel that I AM in the VERY best of Hands!!
We have missed seeing you in the past few weeks. (Well not as much as USUAL!!)  It's VERY nice to see you back and I HOPE that you are doing BETTER!!!  :)

Robyn - You KNOW you don't EVER have to apologize to me!!  Silly Girl !!  :)  I'm VERY glad that you have discovered how much more comfortable the stitches are than the Staples.  They REALLY HURT - DON'T they????  I TOTALLY hated it when they would become imbedded in my skin and they had to DIG them out.  I REALLY thought I ALMOST needed an anesthetic for them to remove them!!!!  (It makes me shiver to even THINK about it!!!)  JUST AWFUL!!!! :(

Yes - ONLY 2 more days and then I'll be able to FORGET about this Loose Hip and have one that FITS AND WORKS correctly!!!!  I CAN  hardly wait!!!!

Sending a BIG GROUP ((((HUG)))) to ALL of you here at MH.......Mama Sherry  :)

Only two more days!!  I am really excited about this surgery for you Mama Sherry!  I just know it will all go smoothly.
I think the epidural and regular stitches will help tremendously.  I've never had staples, but my husband did and he said they constantly got infected, even with him cleaning them all the time.  I had an epidural with my second baby and it was wonderful.  The recovery was not bad at all and I was able to focus on the birth of my daughter.
I'm glad that you mentioned that you were able to request the stiches.  I will make a point of requesting them as well when I have my c-section.  It's so great to have so many friends experienced in these things.
Can't wait until Wednesday!  I will be praying for you before, during, and after the surgery!  We all love you and want the absolute best outcome for you!

I apologize for not being on the boards much lately, but I'm so glad that I was able to find this post and answer it before your surgery.  I want to wish you the absolutely best of luck - not only for a perfect surgery, but also for a quick and painless as possible recovery.

It sounds like you've definitely got a great surgical team this time- I'm sure they'll take great care of you.

I'm glad you were able to talk to the surgeon beforehand and arrange for him to use stitches instead of staples.  I sure wish I would have asked for them when I had my shoulder replacement surgery a couple of years ago - the staples were absolutely HORRIBLE!!  Not only did they pinch and grab like you said, at every move, but having them removed was TORTURE!!  I had 45 staples and about 6 of them had either been put in wrong or had managed to twist themselves, so it was excrutiatingly painful for those to be removed - the others weren't much better!  I absolutely know from now on I will specifically ask for stitches whenever I need surgery.

I, too, had a nerve block before that surgery - it was a really strange sensation - seeing my arm, but being completely unable to move or feel it!  I remember after anesthesia came and gave me the nerve block, as they were wheeling me into surgery, the nurse asked if I was in any pain and I could quite honestly say to her "For the first time in I can't even remember how long, NO!!"  I will say, however, I think I personally was a bit unprepared for my pain level when the block wore off though.  I'm sure it was mostly me - for some reason instead of it wearing off gradually, like when you get novocaine a the dentist, mine wore off almost instantaneously - one minute I was completely numb and the next minute, the block was completely GONE!  My roommate in the hospital had had the same surgery with the same surgeon the same day and hers was a much more gradual wearing off, so it didn't hit her like a ton of bricks like it did me.  But for the time that it still worked, it was like heaven!

Today - sit back, relax, and just think how much better you're going to feel when the surgery is all over.

We'll all be watching for updates on how you're doing!

Robyn

Mama Sherry I am so glad  you have such a great surgical team ! That helps to set our mind at ease when we are having surgery .I had the epidural you speak of with my shoulder surgery last yr and it was amazing ! I had no pain for hours after my surgery ! You have the right positive attitude about this as you do everything and with that and a great caring surgical team you are going to do fabulously ! I just know this is going to be a huge success for you and you will feel better than you have for years .You know I love you and you will be in my prayers this week as you undergo your surgery .We will miss you here but you need to focus on you right now and know we are all behind you 100% .Please take care Mama Sherry and rest and get yourself ready for this .Hugs and kisses to you .Love your adopted daughter

Thank you, Mama Sherry.  I know that I'm not the only one who's had a lot to deal with lately, though, and many of us don't even share the challenges we are going through, yet we all manage to support eachother.  Sometimes it helps me to hear about what everyone else is going through to put my own issues in perspective.

I am so glad Chris is aware of the leg shortening and hopefully will be able to fix it so that you have little to no limp!
You really are a great patient and I'm sure your doctors and surgeons are happy to be helping you!
I just can't wait to hear about how this surgery works for you!

I missed your post. I seem to be missing people's posts lately! I'm so happy that your appointment went well and that Chris was nice and capable! Yay! I am thrilled for you. Thank you so much for updating us!

I love PT too. I go a lot, and it really helps me to be able to function. I work really hard and even though I get frustrated with myself at times, it's worth it.

Mama Sherry, I am so happy to hear your good news. I'm praying for you--that you have a great surgery and that recovery is quick and also that your pain goes down afterwards:)

Hugs,

Flower

Thanks for the compliments - EVEN this "tough old broad" appreciates what you said.  LOL

I LOVE your posts as they NEVER fail to bring a smile to my face!!  I have to tell you I'm VERY happy that they are going to do the epidural as they have NEVER done that before and that will DEFINITELY keep that initial pain that you have at bay for at least 2 to 3 hours!!  I'm MORE than happy to have it put off for that period of time.  You are SO correct about it allowing your meds to take effect and THEN I won't have to play the catch-up game with the surgical pain!!  Thanks for letting me know how WELL the Epidural workid for you.  That makes me EVEN more excited about this surgery!!

It was REALLY nice to have more than one "good news" post today wasn't it!!  I LOVE it when we have them too.

Thank you again and I hope that your pain is doing better, "Lena" (would love to hear your singing voice)!!!!  :)  Good Luck.........Mama Sherry  :)

I can scarcely believe my eyes - another "good news" post!  :-D

Sounds like you couldn't ask for a better surgical team and plan - I particularly agree with the epidural approach.  That will keep you out of pain for a good long time, so that when it is discontinued, pain meds will actually work instead of constantly playing catch up to out-of-control pain.  I had a nerve block before my last shoulder surgery, and while it wasn't the most pleasant experience, it was absolutely worth it.  I never had to feel that horrible post-op pain, and my recovery and PT went much smoother.

Even more important, you have a FANTASTIC attitude about your surgery.  A positive outlook and firm understanding of the surgery makes such a difference in recovery.  You have both my prayers and great admiration for the way you are dealing with everything.  Like I've already said a few times, you're a tough old broad and don't ever let anyone else convince you otherwise!  :-D

I'm sorry I forgot to address something that is VERY important!!

Mary - I DON'T have to worry about withdrawals.  I took my 12 Fentanyl patch off yesterday and haven't taken ANY of my BT meds since the FIRST thing yesterday morning.  I'm not havng AN problems with W/D's at all.  The ONLY thing that I'm feeling is the increased pain in my back and in my leg and hip.  Do you remember a couple of months ago when I was having problems with the UTI that I had and the vomiting from the ATB's?  I removed my 12 Patch then to see what - if any - the effect of the patch had on the vomiting and ATB and I had NO withdrawal's at all!!

So that's ONE thing I don't have to worry about - THANK HEAVENS!!!  :)..Mama Sherry

Once again - I want to thank ALL of you so much for the kind words that you shared with me!!

I wanted to share one more thing with you all. I REALLY thought Ihad posted this but I guess I forgot to mention it.  LOL  When we were talking he got up and looked at the X-ray and then he walked over and took hold of my ankles and held them out straight in front of me and said "your leg is shorter"!!  I said yes - when I went in for the surgery he know that it was 1/2" shorter than the other leg and he said that he would fix it.  BUT he DIDN'T!!  Chris then proceeded to tell me that it is now ONE and ONE HALF inches shorter!! THREE times shorter than when I had the last surgery.  He said it is because the hip joint has moved almost STRAIGHT up and down instead of laying flat across as it should be.  I'm VERY anxious to see how much of my LIMP will be gone after my surgery!!  I am probably one of the FEW people that loook forward to my PT as I KNOW that how well I preform my PT will dictate JUST how well I will recover and be able to walk AFTER my surgery.  I ALWAYS push myself to do 110% when it comes to my PT and it has ALWAYS paid off with GREAT dividends for me and I FULLY expect it to be the same this time ALSO!!  I hate to think how bad I would have been IF I hadn't done the same with my "BAD" surgery this last time.

Tuck - I want to thank you for taking your VALUABLE time to take my Daughters PM's and post them for me on my progress!! It really means a lot to me!!  You ALWAYS go the "extra mile" for us on the Forum.

Opus - Thank you SO much for including me in your prayers with Karen!!  She MOST certainly has needed ALL of our help and it's WONDERFUL that everyone has been there for her!!!  You are so kind and caring!!!  :)

Mary - You are ALWAYS such a Sweetheart to ALL of us and there for us WHENEVER we need kindness and thoughtfulness!!  Such a TRUE Friend to us ALL!  Thank you SO much for the VERY kind words today!!!  :)

Jaded - How VERY unselfish of you to take the time while you are going through such a TRYING and DANGEROUS time yourself today to post on this post this morning!!!  You NEVER fail to be kind and considerate and SO concerned about EVERYONE on here!!
PLEASE know that my thoughts and Prayers are with you AND your Sweet Baby Girl TODAY and ALWAYS!!!!

My Dear Sara -  It REALLY means SOOOO very much to me that YOU would take the time to post on this today!!!  You are SUCH a VERY Special Friend and I'll ALWAYS remember it!!  I hope that you will feel better and hopefully be posting again on here with more frequency!!!  :)

ALL of you are SOOOO very DEAR to me and I thank you ALL for the kindness that you have ALWAYS shown to me since I FIRST came on MH!! I'll NEVER forget how much you ALL have helped me these past  5 and 1/2 months!!! THANK  YOU!!!

Sending you ALL my Love and thoughts and Prayers to you ALSO  so that YOUR pain will be controlled MUCH better than it has been!!!!........Mama Sherry

Sherry, it sounds like you're in great hands.  Not to mention that you're a dream patient.  And I'm so glad you got sutures instead of staples!  I had staples for my 2nd C section and they were awful!!

Now you rest and take care of yourself for once.  No more worries about anyone else but YOU!!  And please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers.  For reasons we've discussed already, I've not been posting much.  But you are very much in my thoughts.

All my prayers and wishes for good luck my dear friend.

I will pray that the surgery will go smoothly and hopefully be the best you've ever had.  You have "all your ducks in a row" (or should I say doctors in a row, haha).  I know it's going to go great.  It sounds like you and they are prepared for everything and anything.
You actually make ME excited about your surgery just from hearing about how it's going to go and hopefully take care of the issues and the pain!
I can't wait to hear how it went and how you're feeling afterward.
Tuck, Thank you for arranging to give us updates!  We will app be concerned, I know.
Mama Sherry, rest, Rest, REST!!  We want to hear about how much you are resting!  You will be in our thoughts and prayers!

Having trouble posting!  Mama Sherry, sounds like you have everything in place and that you're very comfortable with your medical team.  I know when you take the patches off and stop the BT meds you'll also have increased pain, but will you also have withdrawals?  Do they have a plan for that?

You are always in my prayers, Mama Sherry.  You are a true gem, always finding time to encourage and support everyone in your positive, loving way.  My prayers are bumped up for you and your medical team.

Love & Hugs

Thanks Sherry for providing us with detailed information about your upcoming surgery. You know we will all be praying for you.

And per our preplanned arrangement, rest assured that I will be keeping our members abreast of your surgical progress...until you can return to the board....which won't be soon enough for any of us.

It sounds like you have everything taken care of and are ready to go. I will be praying that this repair, this fixing of a previously botched surgery will give you a new lease on life. You are still very young to be so disabled and have to endure this intense chronic pain. You deserve a much better quality of life.  The saddest thing to me is that had the surgery been performed right the first time, there would be no need for a second. Yet you have handled this with grace and courage....refusing to play the victim. I commend and admire your strength.

I'm wishing you the very best. Please know that you will be in my thoughts and prayers and that you will be so-oo missed. We'll look forward to your speedy recovery and return.

Peace and Blessings,
~Tuck
