Methadone

I have questions regarding Methadone for treating pain. I been on Norco for quite awhile and have gotten tolerant to it. The Doc tried to put me on Percocet 10mg but i got very depressed when on it so we went back to Norco. I have been on MS Contin 3yrs ago also Fentanyl Patches up to 100mcg 1yr ago even been given Suboxone for pain. I did not like the Fentanyl and it only lasted 48hrs for me. The Doc told me that we should try Methadone and i said no way but i'm not sure now. Anybody here on Methadone for pain or have experiense with it. Thanks ,F1

Going from Hydro to Methadone is like jumping from the frying pan into the fire. There MANY alternatives between the two.

Did you end up on methadone? I hope not. It might work very well, but you'll never be able to get off the stuff unless you go onto something higher in tolerance than anything else you were on before. I do tests and 50mg of methadone a day to come off you need 100mg of morphine to equivilant that. I hate methadone, it's ruined my life - my dr. won't give me real pain meds without a $1000 MRI and methadone has made me depressed, unable to pee, and smoke constantly. When Im on morphine it is way different I feel like myself and am able to do whatever I need to and my head is clear and not tired feeling! Hope you didn't choose methadone. At least don't go over 50mg ever and expect to have regular pain meds help you again the same way.

I was prescribed oxycodone for fibromyalgia (in Ontario) and took it for 3 years before I moved to Alberta.I didn't even know what oxycodone was! all I knew was that it worked. Doctors in Alberta would not fill my prescription as they only prescribe oxycodone for "terminal" cancer patients (in their words). Alberta has a triplicate prescription system that refrains doctors from prescribing narcotics "willy nilly" as some doctors in other provinces choose to do. I'm now on methadone and would MUCH rather be on methadone than oxys. Oxys are SO dangerous and the side effects are disturbing. It works VERY well, but the more you take, the more you need, and then you're in a downward spiral and addicted to pain killers. At least with methadone, there aren't any serious health risks (if taken properly) and it doesn't make you feel high and useless (oxys made me feel this way) anyway, I think oxys should be banned...too many people have fallen victim to them without knowing anything about them and how harmful they can be.

Going to see my pain Doc. next week so i will see what happens. I have great respect after reading the W/D from this Methadone. The thing to is if it works i hope that a person can function on it. I dont know what is left out there as far as meds. i tried Fentanyl, MS Contin, Oxycodone and they did not work. The Oxycodone made me very depressed so i figure i cant take that. Maybe the pain i have wont be treated with Narcotic pain meds. very well anymore but I tried most of the muscle relaxers but they did not help either. I will let you guys know what happens. Thanks, F1

Methadone made me very sick. I could not stop vomiting. Took 5 days after I stopped taking it to stop vomiting. I have not encountered anyone else who had that problem though so I assume it's rare. It helped me enourmously with the pain though!

While your doctor may suggest methadone, you have a right to refuse change, as far as I know.

Methadone is still used as a pain killer, but the social ramification may make it more than a little impractical.

In the USA, if you are a minority, anyone seeing methadone in your medical chart will first assume that you are being treated for heroine addiction, which may be a good argument to use against your doctor's making any changes that involve methadone!.

Hello Bunny,

I am so sorry to hear about your untreated pain. I urge you to make a new post so others can see it and respond instead of adding it on to a post that may not be reread.

No one should have to suffer as you are...please see another physician. As Sandee suggested a rheumatologist may be beneficial. I don't know what type of physicians you have seen but I encourage you to keep searching.

Fibromyalgia is real! The majority of informed medical practitioners recognize it as a painful, often life altering disease condition. It appears that you have not found one that understands the pain that accompanies Fibro. My heart goes out to you.

Please keep in touch and if you can re-post this message so our Fibro members will see it and respond. I hope you will become an active participant of our community. We'll look forward to hearing from you again.

Take Care,
~Tuck

Hi,
I am sorry your in so much pain with no help. There are doctors that do know this is a real disease and treat it. Have you tried a rheumatologist? They are usually very good about treating fibro pain.
I will see what I can find for you and get back to you:)

I have tried the methadone and absolutly could not function on it. I could not stay awake at all. I slept the entire time I was taking it. I took it for about a week and I literally could not keep my eyes open and was on a low dosage.
Everyone is different and tolerates medications differently. Have you tried Oxycontin or Opana. I believe there is an extended release formula of Dilaudid too.
I would talk to your doctor about which options he can offer you. It may take trying a few before you find what is right for you.
Let us know how your doing:)

Thanks for responding Imcoy. It is so helpful to others when you have some good personal knowledge to share.

Methadone did not make me drooling or groggy. It just didn't work and the headaches were horrid. So bad they made me vomit. I was on an extremely low dose.

Yes F1, we CP sufferers are faced with difficult decisions as we travel through this chronic pain journey. No one will ever know to what degree unless they are in our shoes.

Best of Luck!

I was on time-release oxy at high doses for cronic injurys and when it quit working as well I switched to methadone. I was just comatose, drool on my chin asleep for about 2 weeks, and didn't think I would be able to stay on it, but all the suden that went away and I have never been on a pain med that had less side effects. I have been able to cut my dose back quite a bit and am still getting great pain coverage and just feel much much better. I do believe what I have been told the the taper off or withdrawl from methadone is a long and complicated process, so don't take it unless you have a darn good reason, but for me it was a success.

Hi F1,

I have been and am exactly where you are. I've tried everything but oxycodone in any form and my physician hates the drug.

I think the usage of methadone for chronic pain depends in part on the area that you reside. It was the first "Bid Dog" that my physician suggested. I did reluctantly try it. It did nothing for my pain. Maybe the dosage was not high enough but I found the side effects unbearable.

There are some excellent articles on the use of methadone in chronic pain management.  Some physicians consider it the best alternative. It is less likely to produce euphoria and has one of the lower abuse rates of any of the "Big Dogs."

I remain on hydrocodone due to my extreme sensitivity to narcotics. So we seem to be similar in that area. I wish you the very best. Please keep in touch and let us know what you decide and the effectiveness of the narcotic you and your physician chose.

Take Care,
~Tuck

Thanks for your post. Is this considered a big jump going from Norco to Methadone. I dont do well at all on Oxycodone but i dont now if there is anything in between Norco and Methadone that i should consider. MS Contin did not seem to do much as far as painrelief and Fentanyl i did not like at all. I'm very sensitive about meds which dont help that is why i been on Hydrocodone for so long. I will see what the Doc. says. Thanks, F1

Methadone is not used as much these days to treat pain. My father has been on it for over 15 years. He suggests going another route. I am on Fentanyl 100mcg with Oxycodone 15mg tablets (x2 every 4-6 as needed for breakthrough pain).  This combination seems to work well for me.  I have had ankle fusion surgery and have Chronic Pain in my lumbar spine along with Face Joint syndrome.
