I have never heard of these patches bursting before.

What were you doing to make the patch burst?

As far as putting on another, you have only 10 patches for a 30 day period, and you will run short of your patches 3 days early.

So, I would notify your doctor's office of this problem, and save the faulty patch for reimbursement.

Ask your doctor what you should do about the burst patch.

Hello and Welcome,

I have heard of the gel Fentanyl Patches leaking. It can be a life threatening event. Actually I had hoped they were going to discontinued the gel patches.

Fentanyl "Patch" comes in two types of delivery systems, gel or matrix. It depends on the manufacture as to what system they use.

The matrix is deemed safer as it does not leak - or "burst." If it were me and my insurance would allow I'd switch to the matrix deliver system. There is no reservoir of medication in a matrix patch - instead there are layers of the medication. There is no fentanyl gel in a matrix style patch.  A matrix fentanyl patch places the fentanyl in adhesive.

By all means return the defective patch to the Pharmacy where you purchased it. As Phil said, contact your prescribing physician and make him/her aware of the defective patch. Be cautious when handling the defective patch as your body can still absorb the Fentanyl is you touch it. Dangerous over doses can happen.

Please let us know how your physician and pharmacy handle the situation. I'll be very interested in hearing the rest of your event.

Good luck and take care.

I'm sorry I'm so late to this question but yes, they do still make the gel patch as well as the matrix.  The gel patch is cheaper than the matrix, or so I was told at the hospital when I had my hip surgery, as that is what the hospital uses for their patients.  It's. VERY dangerous to use, as Tuck was saying, because if it breaks, as it did in your case, you will get an overdose of the medication.  They make a cover to go over it and my pharmacy gave me the covers when I first started using Fentanyl. My Doctor thot they automatically gave the matrix but then he learned to ALWAYS specify the matrix.  I use the Mylan brand but when I have my hip surgery next week, I know that I will be back on the "gel" brand while I'm in the hospital and re-hab facility.

Didn't you receive the covers for your patches as they are free from the manufacturer.  BE SURE and ask your Pharmacist a out this ASAP.  When the cover is on them, they SHOULD be safe for you.  I'm assuming g here that you didn't have the cover on them.  DON'T USE ANYTHING TO COVER THEM OTHER THAN WHAT IS MADE SPECIAL FOR THEM. If you use so.ethi g not made for them, you can get TOO MUCH of the Fentanyl in your system.  Just BE CAREFUL!!!  :)

Hope this will help, even tho it is late.  :)

SUPPOSED to be "If you use SOMETHING not made for them......"

Hope that helps you understand my sentence better.  :)
