Nycunta
I haven't seen much about this med and am wondering if anyone has tried it? My pain doctor suggested it last week as I am still not getting great pain relief. She also mentioned trying methadone again, which I am dead set against. Any info on Nycunta would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Femmy, I am taking Opana ER 2 :10mgx2 times a day. It worked very well for me. I have been taking it for 4 years now, same dose and same 2x's a day. Carry's me pretty far and it does work for 12 hours.
I hate to see anyone say that they are taking these chemical medications, and maybe here isn't where I should be writing this. But, after 4 years, I am ready to try to detox from the opiates.
I've had enough, and my memory has suffered terribly from the meds I take. I was taking a total of 10 a day, now if I take out the Opana, I can knock that down to 8. I must also tell you that those 8 pills are all for the symptoms of Fibro, and all the problems it brings.
I found that Cymbalta helps with the fibro pain and depression. It is a 2 for 1 pill. The neurontin that I take is for the restless leg syndrome. From what I have read and heard, neurontin is something that has terrible withdrawal issues. And I would assume that after I come off the pain meds that the rls will come on stronger.
I have been working with my dr. and have been trying for the last year to come off as many pills as possible. So I have been working on that. I am pleased to say that I have weaned down to the smallest amount ever for pills. From like 17 a day down to 10 down to 8 and then we will see.
Anyway, to answer your question, Opana is a pretty good pain pill, with some side effects. I did find that it did not bother my IBS/constipation.

I do have an herbal, essential oil formula for aches and pains if you would like to know more about it let me know. I used that before the pain pills and still use it today for all those little extra knots, and muscle pain, etc.

I have taken Nycunta about 10months I started it about a week after the FDA gave it the ok. When I started it I thought it would not help because I didn't get any relief but after 3 weeks it started helping and now I take it on a regular basis and it works very well. I would recommend it to anyone who is suffering from chronic pain.
The worst of the side effects are abating with this. I am actually hopeful that it's going to work. I slept all night Sunday night for the first time since my original surgery in '07. Usually I'm up twice at night withe pain.
The downside is that the pharmacies near me don't carry it so I have to go about 45 minutes away to get it. But if it turns out this does work for me, I'll ask my regular pharmacy to order it.
I still have the anxiety, though not nearly as bad. The nerve pain in my arm and hand is gone and I basically at the moment have only pain in the area of where the surgery was.

The anxiety from the Nucynta does not sound good at all as I also deal with an anxiety disorder and anxiety produced by medications is much worse than anxiety produced from something other than medication so I completely understand not being able to deal with that side effect.
Opana ER is oxymorphone in extended release form. Oxymorphone is a completely different opioid than morphine. It is about 3 times stronger than morphine and 2 times stronger than oxycodone in pill form. A portion of a dose of Oxycodone is metabolized into Oxymorphone by the liver...similar to how codeine is metabolized into morphine by the liver. Opana ER has the new TimerX technology that is supposed to keep a steady level of the medication in your system for the full 12 hours versus the medicine tapering off after 6-8 hours in the case of morphine sulfate ER and Oxycontin. The have a wide range of strengths available with even a low enough dose of the opioid naiive patient.
I won't start taking it until Monday after I speak with my doctor about the dosing as I think it is a little on the high side, especially at night. I think taking the current dose during the day would be optimal for me but I want to double check first because the pharmacists were freaking out at the increase and blowing up my phone yesterday to make sure I didn't take it so I want to make sure I have talked with my doctor and have a clear understanding of the dosage I should take.
I am hopeful that it will eliminate most if not all of my breakthrough meds. That would be so nice. That was the goal with the morphine ER when I started that but my doctor wasn't willing to titrate more than twice so I was stuck and had to rely on breakthrough pain meds every day. But my new doctor is very supportative and caring and understands how important being a bigger part of life is to me. So I am very hopeful that we will find the right dose for me. You read more about opana at their website at http://www.opana.com . They have a lot of good information there. Also you can request a $25 copay to help pay for the brand prescriptions. They have generic Opana ER in 7.5 mg and 15 mg dosages. But the 5, 10, 20, 30, and 40 mg dosages are all brand until Jan 2013.
I will definitely let you know how it works. I plan to take my first dose tomorrow evening before bed at about 8 o'clock. You have no idea how happy I am about this change! My pain has been uncontrolled for so so long and I am so looking forward to sitting in my chair at work without PAIN at several points during the day! I will have only one focus...work versus pain, work, pain, work! :)

Most of the bad side effects i had with this have gone away. My mouth is still a little dry and my legs are very weak and achy. i did talk to her about going back on a long-acting med, at least for the winter. i'll have to ask her about Opana ER. (Is that morphine) Maybe being on the long acting would eliminate some of the breakthrough meds.
Nucynta is not a good med for me, i don't think. One of the worst symptoms for me is extreme anxiety. i deal with anxiety a lot and have learned to manage it but this seems different. I'm having some visual issues with it as well.

I am sorry to hear the Nucynta isn't working out for you. I have heard a lot of gripes about it over the internet. I found a new primary care physician today and he switched me from Morphine Sulfate ER to Opana ER at a MUCH stronger dose...if you see my other post, I am a little afraid to take it tomorrow morning because the dose is much higher than my current total dose of morphine sulfate ER plus percocet. Have you tried Opana or Opana ER? It is oxymorphone. I plan to take my first dose tomorrow morning and I'll let you know how well it works for me. Maybe that is a medicine you could ask your doctor about. It actually says on the company website that it lasts a true 12 hours versus 8 hours like morphine and oxycontin. It has some new TIMERx technology built into it.
I agree that the volteran gel is only one piece to the puzzle. I know it wouldn't be working as well if I weren't taking opioid medications. It has helped A LOT with the pain that is left behind after taking my other medications. I am glad it helps some for you too and I hope that you find a medication that helps with your overall pain soon. Please continue to let us know how your trial process is going.

I've used the Voltaren gel for a couple of years. It definitely takes the edge off. I think, for me, it's a matter of stringing a bunch of things together.
So far I am totally unimpressed with this new med. First day was awful. Had definite withdrawal symptoms, though moderate. A little better now. Really bad anxiety, though, and it just doesn't touch the pain.
I'm giving it a fair chance until Monday. I guess I'm very sensitive to medications, and I probably need to look at which one gives me the most benefit with tolerable side effects. So far, it seems to me that oxycodone is coming out ahead. Interesting, though, that with certain manufacturers' dosages I have more side effects than with others.
I'm also more at ease with meds that have been around for a long time.

I have not tried Nucynta but I have researched a lot about it over the internet and it's chemical make-up is similar to Tramadol, which I know you have tried in the past. It increases serotonin in the brain similar to a SSRI anti-depressant and binds to the mu opioid receptors in the brain and the spinal cord. The generic name for Nucynta is Tapentadol and it is much stronger than Tramadol but they are both very similar to each other. They advertise that Nucynta has less bothersome side effects (e.g., constipation, itching, sweating) when compared the opioid agonist medications such as morphine, oxycodone, etc. I do hope the Nucynta helps with your pain. Please update us on how it is working for you.
I also know you mentioned that you deal with chronic low back pain. You may want to ask your doctor about Voltaren Gel. I was just prescribed this medication yesterday and it is working GREAT for my low back pain! It is officially for osteoarthritis and RA but the spine orthopedic specialist I saw yesterday said that it can be used off label for low back pain caused by nerve root inflammation due to intervertebral disc compression. I am using it as a substitute for the epidural steroid injections to give my joints and bones a break. So far I am amazed at the results I am getting.

When I searched for this on-line I actually found a site where you could have a "live chat" with a representative of the Drug Company that manufactures Nucynta.
The FDA Website also carries information on Nucynta. Sorry Mary I don't have any personal information on this medication. It appears to be fairly new. You'll be our resident "expert." :o)

The proper spelling of this medication is Nucynta. I'm thinking I"ll give it a try, though the fact I can't find a lot of information on it from people who've tried it makes me a little anxious.
