PAIN

I  am 52yrs.old female with severe osteoporosis.52% bone loss, kyphosis,& so much pain i am on the edge.I have suffered 3 compression fractures, that when the last one happens I heard the bones crunch so bad that it sounded like eggs crushing. I have been taking slo-release morphine for 4 yrs.My dose has been at 100mg.BID & 10mg statex for break thru pain.I also take Lyrica. However the pain is increasing & I can only sit,lay stand for 5-10 minutes at a time.Any suggestions for better pain control?I cannot take anti-inflammatorys due to having blood clots in my lungs (x3).I take warfarin 8mg od to maintain an INR of 3.0...
I have been sent to a spinal pain clinic & they thought about doing kyphoplasty but apparently there is a risk of cement clots & due to my history they decided not to do it.They also said it would not likely help because I do not have an acute injury .Do you have any suggestions.Thank you for your time.

Hi Queenie,

Welcome to MedHelp's Pain Management Forum. I am very glad that you found us and took the time to share your medical concerns.

What recommendations ARE the Spinal Pain Clinic Physicians giving you? I hope they are offering you some options. If not please seek a second...or third opinion. Sometimes it only takes that one PMP to come up with the right or different treatments ....treatments or medications that other PMP may not even have thought about.  I would not stop at one opinion....or even two. Be assertive and keep searching.

My heart goes out to you. Your pain must be great...and many of us here can relate. Please know that none of us are Experts. Yes, some of us have medical backgrounds no one is a PM Specialist or Physician. Only a physician that has examined you and knows your medical history can make medical recommendations. You should not take medical advice from anyone other then your physician(s).

We are here to offer our support and share our personal experiences and information. I hope you will be active in our community. Please feel to respond to other posts. Your input will also be appreciated.  We'll look forward to your updates...so please let us know how you are doing.

Take Care,
~Tuck

The only other thing I could suggest is the Fentanyl patch. What I assume you mean by slow release morphine is MS Contin, which is a very powerful drug, especially at 100mg. I have worked with a lot of patients that once put on the Fentanyl patch, finally felt releif. But it's not for everyone, the nausea symptoms of narcotics can be more intense. This is a 72 hour patch that you apply to your skin every three days. Some patients I've known have been on both Fentanyl and a small dose os MS Contin, with liquid morphine for breakthrough pain. It also won't interfere with your Warfarin. It's worth a shot if you haven't tried it. Second thoughts are the pain pump, whitch is implanted in you and is intrathecal route, like an epidural. That's for back breakingg pain, which you may qualify for. They can put several drugs in this pump. Talk to your doctors about these if you can, since you are obviously in pain and deserve releif! Good luck and keep us posted!
