Pain management

Male, 30 years of age. I've been actively riding motorcycles and generally being physically active in extreme sports since about 8 years old. I was in a serious car accident at age 19, which I was not buckled in and was thrown about. Nothing was broken, but I pay for it today.

I have dabilitating pain that comes and goes in my shoulder than runs down my back and up my neck and face. It also runs down my arm.

I've had tons of probing and exams, they've jammed huge needles in my back and shoulder to listen to muscle health or something I'm not even quite sure what all they've done anymore.

Pain pills make me sick, and don't actually do anything for the pain. This is a genetic issue, as my mother and grandfather also received no pain relief from medications. Even the high doses during my mothers death from cancer, the pain relief finally only came from high doses of IV fed pain medications in which she was basically comatose. Percocet makes me tired, Oxycontin does nothing at all. I had surgery to have my appendix removed and they injected a high dose of something into me in the recovery room but all that did was dope me up so bad I slept.

Bottom line is this: The pain is so bad I sit in a chair all day. I dont' want to sit but I'm kind of out of options. I've stretched, done yoga for 3 months. I drink water, I'm healthy, my immune system is extremely fast to react and I don't get sick. Why am I stuck with this pain? And why can't they identify it? it's so bad I walk funny.

What are my options? Medical marijuana is an option I'm about to look into. I know most doctors don't like it but whatever... I can't take pills that don't work and therapy has done nothing. I had massage therapy for about 3 years 3 days a week. Before I go asking doctors, what should I do? I've rejected their further attempts to dope me up with pills.

Hello Jeremy and welcome to the Pain Forum:

Sorry to hear of the constant pain your suffering with. It's no fun and can ruin your life. I really have to agree with Tuck. Please seek out a Pain Management Specialist. They have many more options for pain control than your regular Physician. And yes, medical Marijuana might be an option but I also think it would make you very dopey.

There is a pain patch by the name of Fentanyl. It has been a miracle drug for me in the past, this might be an option for you. If you would like information about it please see my profile page and send me a personal message. I will fill you in. I really hope you can find something that will work for you. Please take care and good luck in the future,
Mollyrae

Hello Jeremy,

Welcome to the Pain Management Forum of MedHelp. I am so sorry to hear about all your pain issues. We know what pain is like and how it disrupts our lives. I am sorry this has happened to you. I too suffered an extreme MVA and suffered multiple injuries that has left me with chronic pain. The medical community could not find many "reason" for my pain either for years. I can relate.

Have you been to a Pain Management Clinic/Physician? They can offer treatments besides medications. They may get to the route of your pain issues also. You may have myofascial pain syndrome which is now often interchangeable with Fibromyalgia.

There are other pain medications out there such as Tramadol that are not a narcotic that may be helpful. I am not a physician and as stated earlier a good Pain Management Team may be able to come up with some solutions for you.

I am not opposed to medical marijuana but they are even more ramifications from it's perscription and use that more traditionally prescribed pain medications. Indeed I have a son that requires medical marijuana to control a severe life long and life threatening disease. That said I do not recommend the hassle that comes from it unless there are no other options, for my son there is not, for you there may be. The federal government does not recognize it as a legal option, only several states.

So I encourage you to seek a good PMP and explore all options of pain management treatment. I would not be so quick to reject all the physicians attempts to "dope' you up. Marijuana also comes with that effect. I understand your and your families history of poor response to medications but still I would explore all pain treatments and medications offered. Life is too short to suffer with uncontrolled pain.

Good luck to you. Others will post with their suggestions. Please keep in touch and let us know how you are doing. Take Care, Tuck
