Pain

Ongoing Rib cage pain. I had heard that a lack of magnesium can cause rib cage pain due to being on proton pump inhibitors for longer than the recommended 8 weeks. Inhibitors such as protonix, nexium, H2 blockers, etc.
I had just posted , i was getting some relief from going to P.T.
My Physical Therapist is working on stretches and excercises to the specific  area of the rib cage, as I mentioned before but I was wondering if anyone else has heard of the inhibitors reducing the magnesium in your system to the point where it causes the rib cage pain as well as other unhealthy issues.

Have you tried Magnesium Supplements? If so did it ease any pain symptoms. It is so true that Magnesium and Calcium may be depleted due to extended use of PPI's. I have been on them for years and just only found this out. I have had a dull ache in my left side right under my rib cage and would get scared from time to time and have my Liver Enzymes checked just to make sure it was not my liver. Then I began to think it was my large colon that passes near the liver. I also had an EGD done to make sure it was not my stomach or gall bladder. Everything normal and has been except for some gastritis (inflamed stomach--which I take the Zantac for in the first place due to Naproxen daily) Decreasing the acid in the stomach decreases the absorption of other vital nutrients you need. I also started noticing severe cramps in muscles I would not usually ever get a cramp in, and that can also be due to Calcium and Magnesium depletion. I started taking the supplements and it greatly relieved the symptoms. Good luck to you.

I have not yet tried the magnesium supplement because PT is slowly working to alleviate some of this right rib cage pain that I have had for way to long.
If I tried the magnesium while I was also doing PT, and the problem got lessened then I wouldn't know which one did it. So I am waiting to see how this goes and if it doesn't rid me of it, I will go to the MD first to have my mag levels checked and even if they are good , ask him about magnesium mainly because I have Fibro.
Thank you so much.

One other side note, you can get Osteoporosis from being on PPI's too long so make sure you take extra calcium.

Have you seen an MD to check what might be causing this pain?
I have had amazing results from first seeing my MD who then referred me to the Physical Therapist. When you mentioned down your right flank, it reminded me of the flank excercises he has me doing, not to mention all the others.
I experience quite a bit of pain the 3 consecutive days of P.T. but the pain eases up and had completely for 6 consecutive days. So from where I began with this right rib cage pain, that was a constant dull ache, I have so many more hours daily without any at times. So it is easing up at a slow pace but my hope is that it will soon be gone or that I will be able to maintain keeping the pain at bay with continued wellness program that is at the same place I see my PT. With Fibromyalgia, there is always going to be some kind of pain somewhere but I am able to keep it from taking over.
