My heart breaks reading some of these posts.  If you have a legitimate prescription from your doctor for your pain medication and you can't afford it, let me tell you what I did.  Let's say the drug you are on is made my Pfizer.  You can contact the company directly, apply for financial assistance, which ALL drug companies now seem to have; and possibly receive your medication for FREE or even at a huge discount.

This thing on TV that Montel Williams advertises called PPA, actually CHARGES YOU, $15.00 per prescription for contacting drug companies about getting you discounts or medications for free.  Why pay for PPA to do it (which Montel doesn't tell you on the commercial and will consequently get a stern letter from me) when you can contact the drug manufacturer yourself?

I know about PPA FIRST HAND, since dealing with them personally, so I am not making any of my comments up.  I was appauled when I found out that they CHARGE poor people, such as myself.  Montel Williams, you should tell your audience what PPA is really about...  Shame on you.

I read your comment to hardhead about a pain clinic that would cost a lot lower than what he is doing.  Were you able to tell him where it was.  I also have chronic back pain no insurance and I am trying to get my disiablity.  I have no one that will help me with my back pain and I'm getting worse.  What can I do

You might try contact the American Academy of Pain Management.  They can tell you what docs are in your area.  If you have insurance, check your plan's website for Pain Management specialists.  You can also just call your insurance carrier's customer service phone number to see who is on your plan.

  www.aapainmanage.org/members/HealthCareMemList.php

Sometimes large teaching hospitals (I believe Vanderbilt would be a good place to start) have pain clinics on site.  Let your fingers do the walking and call various facilities in your area to see if they have any info.

I think your family doc treated you correctly by referring you to a pain specialist.  I'm actually surprised he even felt comfortable prescribing the fentanyl patch since it's very strong and you WILL have some pretty bad withdrawal if you stop using it.  Most family docs are fine with treating acute pain, but treating chronic pain and dealing with detox are issues outside their general scope of practice, hence the referral to a pain doc.  Did your doc even give you a name to start with?  If not, call him first and ask.

Hello Everyone!  I live in Nashville TN, I have fibromyalgia and my sciatia nerve has been bothering me, also my fingers have been tingling (especially at work I am Administrative Assistant).  I have had shoulder surgery about 1 yr ago, at that time I was informed a disc in my neck was buldging,  I get alot of pain about 1 inch from the middle of my back.  I went to my regular dr. and informed him of this, when he pressed on my back it drew tears to my eyes.  He has me on durgestic 100 patches, ultram 50 mg 1 or 2 every 4 to 6 hours, I told him that even though I was on a patch I still broke though with pain.  He suggested that I go to a pain clinic that they could help me better.  I am not familar with these clinics and not sure where in the Nashville Area I should go.  If anyone has a suggestion please let me know.

Thank you.

Hardhead,
I wont say that you will end up disabled due to drug addiction or dead.  These are things that need to be taken seriously and you have to be careful with them, but there are those that do need pain management and if you are one of those, then I dont think you should feel bad about it.

I do find it alarming though that you are having to buy things off the street and the other thing is the amount of apap you are taking in.  It sounds like you would need someting longer acting and to be monitored carefully both due to the pain and for any other issues (dependency or addiction could be part of those).

I could tell you of a medical place that you could go to in order to get help *and it would drastically lower the amount of money you are spending while being taken good care of and closely monitored*, but I am not sure how to do that on here and I dont want to step on toes.

If your back is that bad why doesnt your doctor put you on total disablity and get on medicare so you can get your back fixed. If you keep going down the road your on you will eventually be on disabity for drug addiction. Your health will go down the tubes and it could kill you. My brother died in August from pain pills he was only 46. Good luck I hope you can find the help you need.
