Hi Jams,
Welcome. The medications you have been prescribed are usual and customary for pain associated with your nerves, also called Neuropathic Pain. It is normally a type of chronic pain which usually results from an insult or injury to the nervous system. However it can be short term.
How effective this combination will be is dependant upon several components. One being is how well they work in your particular system and ihow you respond to them. How they make you feel will also depend on your system. Vicodin (hydrocodone) does not make me feel distant from the pain but they do have that effect on some ppl.
As stated above the side effects can incude drowsiness and slowed reaction. Side effects usually diminish as your body becomes more accustomed to the medications. It's usually an effective combination and I hope you do well on them.
Please keep in touch and let us know how you are doing.
Best of Luck to You,
~Tuck
I've experience with Vicodin and gabapentin (aka: Neurontin). The former is a narcotic pain killer that generally makes you feel "distant" from the pain. The latter is an anticonvulsant/anti-epileptic also used in pain management, particularly for neuropathic pain. Its mechanism of action involves suppressing the formation of new synapses between nerves (not by activating the GABA receptor, as was previously thought). It generally creates a sensation of numbness or dullness where there was pain earlier.
Both should help, but be careful about the side effects, which can include drowsiness, slowed reactions, and such. Hope they help reduce your pain.
